Diapers delay milestones?

I am way overthinking this I'm sure but could cloth diapers delay DS (2 months old) reaching his milestones?

Maybe I folded the diapers wrong, but I put him on his tummy and he is sort of just balanced on his CD like a teeter totter. His little legs and feet don't even touch the floor. It seems like this would make it really hard to roll over or crawl.

The bulkiness of cd does make it awkward for them sometimes but ds still managed to hit all his milestones early (so far) so I guess they still find a way.

disposables are fairly recent and i doubt all babies before their use were delayed because of diapering.

fwiw diapers didn't hinder my kids one bit.

I agree with PP. Cloth diapers have been used for hundreds/thousands of years! I wouldn't worry.

My DD was in sposies till 7 months old. She still didn't roll at all till 6 months. But she was sitting at 4 months. DS is just now 4 months and can roll front to back but is no where near sitting. It is all dependent on the baby. Both my kids have done the teter totter thing where they life both legs and arms and jsut kinda float. It is funny looking, but not detramental.

I think it really depends on the baby. My DS never crawled. NEVER. Simply was not interested. However, he was walking at 9 months. Just skipped that stage altogether. His brothers, on the other hand, were big crawlers and didn't walk until 12 and 15 months. It is different with each kid. I wouldn't worry.

I read an article a couple weeks ago that said CD could delay milestones, but I tried to Google it and couldn't find the article. So I have no source

The only milestones I've ever paid attention to are, "As long as they're potty trained and walking by kindergarten, I'm good."

I really try not to pay too much attention to milestones, I'm worried enough already about potentially breaking my kids

ETA: Or by the time they're five. Part of me really wants to homeschool. *sigh*

funny i was thinking g may roll earlier in her cloth because they are sort of like a weight on her midsection that seems to pull her in one direction once she gets onto her side. i agree with the other posters that you shouldnt worry too much

If you are concerned you could always give him some nekkie time on his tummy. But like the pp's, I've never noticed any delays.

I've never noticed any delays. My dd has done everything in the early to average time frame with no problems.

i was thinking this too, ds has "rolled" a few times by kicking 'down' and using his big fluffy bum as a fulcrum. i don't think its purposeful yet, just a by-product of angry legs

how are you folding the diaper? i can share my fold that i looove if you would like

yup this is what dd does. i dont count them as official rolls either.

Official rolls, lol.

I don't think they delay milestones and even if they did, it's not like it would affect long-term development. Milestones are indicators, not goals.

Yes! Share your fold please!

I have been folding down in the front a couple inches, then doing the tri-fold, so in the front the material is doubled up and huge. Now I do like the slimness of the regular tri-fold, but then liquid baby poo gets everywhere. I've been pulling the back corners forward and using a snappi about half the time, the other half just leaving it folded in the cover.

OK, wiggily DS managed to get his penis in eyery shot despite my best efforts, and i don't have any stuffed animals, so imagine the baby in the diaper!

coming soon POed baby!

I'd be interested in who produced the article.

As a PP mentioned, disposables are fairly new, CDs have been around much longer. It seems the human race still survived despite cloth diaper use

Your LO is only 2 months old, there is still plenty of time to roll over

My mainly cloth diapered little one didn't roll until five months- she could sit unsupported before she could roll! However, she crawled a few weeks later and took her first steps at 7 months.

My mainly EC'd little one crawled at 6.5 months, rolled at 4 months, and walked at 12 months.

I think each baby is different and that cloth, disposable or no diapers neither helps nor hinders development.

I would not say it is the cloth diaper although once I just started to use bg's ds took off like lightning. He was a slug in the bulky cloth. I have read this mainly in books about ECing. If you read Diaper Free it will make much more sense. NO DIAPER (not cloth vs sposies) is the best. Total unrestricted movement. Sposies are very restrictive in other ways. Even during full diapering I always gave ds at least 20 minutes of naked time after each poopy change and he pooped no less than 5 times a day up until 15 months. So he got A LOT of naked time. In the warmer months we hardly ever used a diaper. It riedto ec as much as possible his first summer. I hope to do the same with ds 2.

My ds hit all his gross motor milestones on the early side of the normal range, and my dd hit them all at right about the average ages. No delays here.

The bulk may get in the way a little tiny bit, but it shouldn't hinder milestones. All babies hit them at different times anyway. My DS wore sposies until he was 6 months old, and he's hit some on time, some late, and some early before and after we started CDing. I wouldn't worry about it. If you think there's too much bulk, maybe check into trimmer diapers for tummy time.
