I'm curious to see what everyone else says
I don't like the style of most diaper bags. I was using a Le Sportsac messenger bag forever, and that was good but I got bored with it. Than I had a leather backpack I used, but it's impossible to keep closed! I'm paranoid my wallet is going to fall
Now I'm back on the search again. I do recommend LeSportsac though. Lots of pockets and space

A backpack. You can get one that has a wet/dry section so if you're wet bag leaks a bit by chance no problem. Also good for bathing suits etc. You can wear it with a sling/wrap/carrier. Big bonus. I had a fancy diaper bag (messanger type) and since I wore my baby in a sling it was really uncomfortable. The backpack distributes weight nicely, has lots of pockets and secure zippers, and leaves you with two free hands.

I just used a backpack for DD. When DS came along I wanted to splurge so I got a petuna pickle bottom on clearance. I love it. It is beautiful and so functional, but even on clearance it was $$. I fit enough diapers for a full day (and night) away plus outfits for both kids and my stuff (wallet, keys phone) and has a built in changing pad. The straps can go on back pack style or messenger bag style.

For short trips I use a Kipling cross-body shoulder bag -- it's the one called "Jeel". It's medium size and fits two dipes, wipes case, 2 sippy cups, some snacks, and my wallet keys phone etc go in the outside pocket.
For longer trips I use a Timberland messenger style laptop bag that we bought for $25 at an outlet years ago. It sucks as a laptop bag -- doesn't have enough padding or structure -- but it's perfect as a diaper bag with just the right amount of pockets and compartments. The bonus to me is that it's very gender neutral looking so DH willingly carries it. Plus it fits just right across the handlebars of my monstrous double stroller (the MBUD).
I seem to prefer bags that are lightweight and don't have a lot of structure to them, because the ones that stand up by themselves even when empty, seem kind of heavy and bulky to me. I'm carrying enough stuff as it is, I don't need the bag itself to add weight and bulk.

I have a brocade diaper bag that's sort of messenger-bag style which I had picked up from a shopping guide recommendations. I recommend going with a bag that closes at the top. When you're juggling baby, bottles, diapers, pacifiers, etc. it's very easy for the diaper bag to get dropped, tip over, etc. You'll want a way to be sure you don't end up with all the contents spilling out all over the ground.

We have a SkipHop bag that is okay. DH likes to wear it across his body, but I obviously can't while wearing the babe. I like that it has lots of well thought out pockets, and it's very utilitarian looking and not babyish at all, but I wish I'd just gotten a backpack. Oh well. For those that use strollers, it's got a nice feature that lets you easily clip it to stroller handles.
When we go away for longer than 4-5 diapers and an extra outfit, I use a Land's End tote...enough space for literally each and every one of our diapers and duds for the little guy for about a week or so? Love it.
