what are you buying in the next few months? - Page 2

We have our math ordered (it arrives tomorrow!) and our first science topic already in hand. I still need to order Sequential Spelling and a few books for our pre-history study. I don't need them until mid-September so I am looking for sales between now and then. I'm also stalking ebay for a great price on the Highlights Magazine states packages - I want as close to a full set as possible and then just fill in with individual orders as the time comes. I need to pick out a workbook for basic computer so that we have some ideas on an order for progression and I am looking at some life skills books to figure out a plan for the spring, but I don't know that I'll actually buy anything. I am very very low on basic supplies but I am holding out for the back to school sales. I need notebooks, lined paper, pens, crayons, chalk, colored pencils, paints, art project stuff..all the fun stuff

Great idea, thank you! I hadn't even thought to look there. :

elizawill, I wish we lived close! I have seen TWO childcraft sets at the local thrift store in the past few weeks!
For those looking for childrens atlases Borders has a great one for $5.99. It's oversized and pretty detailed. They also have a universe one for the same price.

We are just waiting for the back to school sales. Paper, glue, pencils, notebooks, glue, pens, erasers, glue, scissors, markers, glue, crayons, folders, binders, did I mention glue?

As for curriculum, I have been so incredibly blessed...a friend of mine is homeschooling her dd (1st grade) this year for the first time. Her MIL bought FIAR 1 and 2, and all the books. She is going through FIAR 1 now, and when she is done, she is letting us use it! Then she will do FIAR 2 and give it to us as well. After I am done with FIAR 1, she plans to sell it to fund FIAR 3, and when I'm done with FIAR 2, she will sell it for FIAR 4. Thanks to her I have access to all four volumes for free!!!

So, until then, we are just reading good books and doing unit studies/notebooking on things we find that are interesting. I may pick up Math on the Level, it looks very interesting, and having one thing for 8 years is appealing to me and dh...but I am waiting for more reviews on it.

We have an AMAZING thrift store near us, and the past few times I've gone I have come home with oodles of books. Today we picked up a TON of wonderful history story books for $.39 each. I think total I bought 40 (or more) books for $20. Some were from a classroom setting, they have the teachers name stamped in. Some math story books, tons of awards winning books, science, geography...Seriously, I could totally home school through the Goodwill store. The last time I went we found a complete microscope set for $4.99. And the time before that, a complete scholastic phonics/writing/spelling/reading set, with workbooks, cd's, games, and 24 books for $4.99. I checked online and it is $50!! (not a hs thing, but I also found a new sling there for $1.99!)

I had been looking for a globe but they are pricey, I found one at Books a Million for $20, plus we get a teacher discount, so it ended up being $16. Not bad, since all the other ones I saw were at around $60!

I don't have much to buy since I have almost everything I will need for fall already. Not all of my expenses are for actual things though.

-dance for all three kids (currently $85 a month )
-apologia marine biology textbook, DD will be taking a class inthe fall which we just decided
-piano worktext for DD2
-basic school supplies like pencils, pens, cardstock, printer paper, ink, folders. we still have plenty of notebooks from last year when I got 6 packs for $.10 and most of my binders are still in good shape and can be reused.

I'm still compiling my list, unfortunately. And it doesn't yet include the basics like pencils, paper, etc.

I'm also still trying to decide if we will use the REAL Science Earth & Space curriculum that we already have but haven't used yet, or if we're going to do Life Science instead. My kids are in disagreement about it.

Also, I haven't yet added US History curricula to this list because I haven't completely decided 100% on anything yet.

It seems like I've been on a buying frenzy lately, it seems like I would run out of things to get at some point.

Organization seems to be our big ticket items left.

DD1 needs a place of her own to keep the stuff she's working on without the little one getting into it.
Playstands
Folders for keeping work
More art supplies, can never have too much of those
Word Family activity

Oh, wow, I have soooo much on my homeschool wish list.......

For now, I would like:
Miquon Lab annotations (we have the orange book and diary)
cuisenaire rods, wood (still don't know how many we'll need for 1 kid, anybody know?)
Singapore 1A/1B textbooks or workbooks? still haven't decided
linking cubes (for math manips)
a long wooden "schooly" shelf for our HS stuff
a wall calendar that we can customize (I'm going to have to create this I know it)
A Walk Through the Stars astronomy book
Strathmore block and stick crayons
modeling beeswax
better watercolor paints
wooden color wheel puzzle
form drawing book--I think DD would really like this
a recorder that's not cracked and made of plastic
a toy piano or keyboard for sounding out our songs---seriously, do we have to use midi?
wooden world map puzzle
globe
Children Just Like Me
Peter Menzel and other World Culture books
Bird rubbing plates and other stamps from montessorinsuch
space atlas book
sign language/spanish for kids videos
a printer that will print adobe!
inexpensive audio recording/notation program
and my disk drive on laptop fixed so she can burn cds
bins/baskets for storing all this stuff!
a bookmaking book
pattern blocks/pattern book
wooden beads for patterning
many, many more books, especially for arts and math
an abacus

We are still waiting to hear from our Charter School's resource consultant to approve our educational funds, so all of this is on hold right now and we are making do on a shoestring until then.

I'm buying a lot of new cool books mostly picking and choosing from sonlights book list.

i'm oggeling (is that how it's spelled?) over some manipulative materials from montessoriandme.com

and of course along the way new markers, paints, paper, glitter, glue, non hardening clay etc etc.

and since DSD is going to public school this year AND we are moving to a much much much smaller place for the year I'm gonna let DS pick out a 'school' backpack. I figure I'll put the next days activities in it at night while he sleeps so It's always like opening up a present in the morning!

LOVE back to school. I always have :

For Free?

[QUOTE=
We spend most of our $$ on art supplies, weekly classes for homeschoolers, and printer paper these days. Everything else I can find for free online it seems.[/QUOTE]

Do share your links! I am new to HSing and flustered at trying to find and fund resources. I am fairly set for my 2nd grader, but for my 8th grader, I am at a near loss.

If you go to the ordering page on the Miquon Math website, there is a package of 74 cuisenaire rods that you can order, so I figured that's how much one would need for any given Miquon book for one student. I may be wrong, but that's the one I ordered. HTH!

The bird rubbing plates sound beautiful! I'm going to have to take a look at those!

Oh! And a space atlas book! I'm going to have to find one of those, too!

And I know you didn't ask, but I wanted to give a little plug for the printer that we use. I have a Canon printer and I've never had a problem with printing Adobe. Also, the ink cartridge colors are all individual, so if you run out of a certain color, you're not spending an arm and a leg to replace a huge cartridge, you just have to buy the one color, which usually ranges $9 - 15 depending on which Canon printer you get. Oh, and I'm fairly certain that most Canon printers will print Adobe. All I've ever really owned are Canons and I've never had a problem. My dad, on the other hand, had an HP (that came with his computer) and had all kinds of problems. HTH, too!

I've finally decided to go ahead and order the Sonlight P 3/4 Core for ds1, who will be 4 in October. I won't be placing the order until August, though, since money is super-tight right now. I already have 2 basic handwriting workbooks and I'm on the lookout for a fun counting and number-recognition workbook. Other than that, I'm looking forward to the back-to-school sales to stock up on paper and art supplies!
Besides the curriculum books, I'll be looking to buy:

- notebooks; when they are .10 I definitely stock up!!
- pencils
- pens
- white out
- glue/glue sticks
- construction paper
- folders
- baskets or a small set of drawers to store paper/pencils in on the counter
- 3 ring binders for making portfolios of the kids' work

Not sure what else right now.

I need the art supplies for Artistic Pursuits 1 and some more readers. Otherwise I *think* we're done. At least for now.
Oooh! I definitely will.

I have also heard of making a Montessori-style land/water globe---pick up an outdated globe at the thrift store, paint all the water solid blue, then use glue and very fine sand to cover all the landmasses. I kind of like this--I mean, that's what the planet looks like; it doesn't have all those lines and words on it. Plus, you get to recycle something that is considered unusable by our society and have a tactile learning aid for the kids!
