You know what makes me most excited about hsing?

Being able to take the time to teach my kids real life skills. And having the the time to do it, rather than rush after school, or on the weekends. Thinks like, doing the dishes, and laundry and car maintenance, heck, house maintenance. And sewing, and knitting and baby care. My youngest just turned a year and DS#1 is the fastest cd changer ever. He puts me to shame :

Other stuff, like how to live frugal and self-sustaining. How to coupon and get good deals at the store. Cooking, and baking, and canning. Gardening and building things like bookshelves (and goodness knows, we need more bookshelves)

The world is our school house and I am loving every single minute of it :

We love homeschooling and choose to keep our kids out of school for all the reasons you mention.

I feel so very fortunate!

Yes!!! That's what I love about homeschooling too!! The days seem so long and free and the possibilities endless when you homeschool! Having them in school 6.5 hours per day and then trying to squeeze in extr-curriculars and family activities in the evenings was super stressful. I'm glad to be done with that.

mine also took the bus too and from school, so they were gone from 8 am until 4:30pm

I love that everyday has at least the potential for adventure, either in or out of the house. Or that everyday can just turn into a "loll in bed and read all day" day.
And that the kids are home to see how much work it takes to maintain a garden and can our food. :

Totally!

It's exciting for me, too, that my kids can be learning skills at home that they can use their whole lives now, instead of waiting until they go away to college to learn this themselves (laundry, cooking, balancing checkbook, etc). Not to mention the handicrafts, sewing, videography, painting, whatever they feel deeply drawn to--they have an immense amount of time and energy to devote to those things as they see fit. Beats filling in worksheets and tests all day!

Reminds me of a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson:

"We are shut up in schools and college recitation rooms for ten or fifteen years, and come out at last with a bellyful of words and do not know a thing."

Love this! I taught my boys to do their own laundry when they were in 2nd and ,4th grade. They are now in 10th and 12 grades. It is just automatic for them now and not a hassle. They will be prepared for life academically, socially and practically too!
