did you grow up in a city? convince me it's OK to raise my kid in a city! - Page 3

I didn't grew up in a big big city and now we live in one. DH was raised in a small rural area of France. That's one of my biggest dreams, raising DS in a rural area in a foreign country, it wasn't until DH started to tell me all the precious memories from his childhood...

But that's never going to happen so I better get used to the idea that we are staying here for a long long time. We live in a nice area of the city, not really in the suburbs but it's pretty neat The neighbors are nice and my parents live nearby. We have what we need here. I think DS will have a nice childhood here, can't see the problem.

But it tends to get a little bit noisy...

Another vote for city living

I've read some, but not all of the replies. I think you'll be able to find pretty much what you want in a city. I grew up in the city and loved it -- just like many others, I was able to run around, have free access to many wonderful diverse experiences, etc. My DH is from the burbs and definitely prefers that type of environment. So we compromised. We're raising our DD in the city-- it's on the smaller side, 85,000 people or so, we chose a residential neighborhood near the woods (I need watch out for deer when driving in the early mornings) and a smaller, fixer upper so that we could also have a nice large backyard. The street is quiet and safe (I sometimes forget to lock our doors), lots of kids running around and the neighbors are friendly. I would have preferred to be closer to downtown since we are a bit removed and I hate driving - bus service near us is a joke (one line and it's sometimes over an hour late), but all of the fun stuff is just a 15 drive away. We sometimes talk about retiring to the sticks, but that's just because we'd like to run a small animal sanctuary one day and land is a lot less expensive and more available in the country.
