How to dispose of kitty poo

We use scoopable litter, scoop everything into grocery bags. Well, we've been doing so well using our reusable bags that we're out of grocery bags--which is GREAT! But i just can't figure out how to dispose of the litter box deposits.

How do you clean the litter box without grocery bags? Sounds so inane, but i'm stuck!

I use chicken feed for cat litter. Works awesome and is entirely flushable. And cheap!

Do you mix baking soda with it? Does the chicken feed stink?

I don't mix baking soda in, but you could. With one cat, I scooped daily an replaced the whole box once a month. No smell until it was almost time to dump the whole thing. With two now, it gets smelly faster. But still smells better (to me) than regular cat litter.

The chicken feed itself smells "grainy".

I had been using Feline Pine cat litter since 1998. After I moved here (Alaska), it was too expensive so I switched to using something called Pine Stall Horse Bedding which is sold in 40 pound bags for $9.

I switched off the clay litter in '98 while I was employed at a pet store. That pet store owner was all about the education and natural care whenever possible. She also had several product representatives come out and do demonstrations and such so we were able to see all the options available. Then she'd choose to sell the highest quality and the most popular (when we couldn't convince customers otherwise).

I learned quite a bit about what is in clay litter and the dangers it poses to the health of your pet, including but not limited to digestive blockages from grooming the claw off their feet with their tongues and it building up over time and respiratory diseases from breathing in silicate dust.

I just couldn't go back to clay after knowing what is in it and how dangerous it can be.

Also, with the pelleted pine litter, I can just scoop the poop into the toilet and the powdered pellets (the ones that get wet turn to powder) are all natural and no worries about it harming the environment.

I found Feline Pine at one of my discount stores, but one of my cats wasn't into it. I kept finding his deposits in front of the litter box. So, not wanting to waste it, i lined the litter box with it and covered it with clay litter.

I was aware of some of the dangers of clay litter. I really do need to switch to something else, so i thank you all for the ideas.

My original question had more to do with getting the poop to the trash. We don't keep a trash can outside. The only thing i could come up with was a putting the poop in a container, taking it to a tall, covered trash can in the garage and dumping it there. But it would take more than a week for that can to fill up...letting the poo stink up the garage even further...don't want to waste trash bags...see where i'm going? It's all about logistics, and i was wondering how others took care of it.

In any case, i'll look into the horse bedding--i like the sound of that. Plus i live in Amish country, so it shouldn't be hard to find.

Thanks!

You could potty train your cats - http://www.karawynn.net/mishacat/toilet.html

We are out in the country, so our cats are outside but I would try it if I needed to. I couldn't stand the litter box when we had one.

Get a bucket, even the one's some litter's are sold in should work to take it to the trash can. With a lid you could also scoop and dump later if you were in a rush.

I use the litter locker. It's basically a diaper genie for cat poop. It may not be the most environmentally friendly option, but it works pretty well. Just scoop daily and turn the handle.

I use bags from the newspaper for both DCat and DDog cleanup.

I take the bags from cat litter and place them outside in a trash can for dog poo. I can't stand animal feces in my home, lol. I pick up my yard once to twice a day and also clean the box about the same.

We use paper bags, which are smaller and require a little aim w/ the litter, but we had also run out of plastic bags (good for you!!).

Our litterbox is in the laundry room next to the garage. Used litter gets scooped into a small trash can with a plastic trash bag liner every day, and that small trash bag goes into the big trash bag about once a week.

I'm inconsistent in my crunchiness, and figure that one additional very small plastic bag a week into the trash is not a deal-breaker like 10+ from a single trip to the grocery store is.

We have a really small kitchen trash can that gets emptied daily. DH just puts the dirty litter in it when he changes it and takes the bag outside.

When we had an indoor cat, we just put the refuse in our composting toilet. No waste - and makes a great compost for the garden when it's ready.

If you're not in a position to have a composting toilet, you can bury a small trash bin in the yard, with the opening level with the ground so that you can still put the lid on. All the cat waste goes into the little bin, which rarely ever gets full because of the bacterial breakdown of the matter.

When I used scoopable litter, I would just scoop everything into a small bag and throw it out. We usually only have a bag of trash a week, so if I cleaned out the litter box when it wasn't trash day, I keep the dirty litter bag in the garage. Dried out cat poop does n't smell like much to me, espcially not as bas as the dirty litter itself. Anyway, it stays in a bag in the garage. I don't clean the littter daily either. I just don't have the inclination and it is in an out of the way place from the family.
