Who's nursing??

Who are our nursing mama's? Are you planning to nurse through the whole pregnancy? Will you tandem after the baby comes?

I'm nursing my 3.5 year old and 13 month old, and while I don't see my 3.5 year old stopping anytime soon, it's crazy to think of possibly nursing 3 next year. Since DD2 is still young, I hope and pray I keep a sufficient supply like during my last pg!

DD kept saying she was going to stop when she turned four. She's not four yet, but her party was yesterday so she thinks she is. She didn't have any milk when she woke up, but reconsidered at night. I guess her four-year-old self has reserved the right to negotiate.

I'm still nursing my 2 year old. She's showing no signs of letting up- but I'm contemplating limiting her a little. I'm also trying to figure out how to get her out of my bed!

My 23-month-old daughter is still going strong. I will nurse her through pregnancy and beyond if she wants. She still nurses as much or more than she eats solids, so if my milk supplies drops she's in for a bit of a surprise unfortunately. I have always had the opposite problem though (oversupply), and my milk came in extremely early with her (I was having to wear breast pads from 22 weeks pregnant and on or I'd leak), so I am not too worried. I don't plan to wean her, but she's not night weaned so if that specifically doesn't happen naturally over the next few months I may take steps to help her learn to fall asleep on her own. She's starting to show signs of that herself with no help from me already though so I think in eight months time I won't have to worry about it. I have no problem tandem nursing (I don't think!), but I can't imagine nursing two over night.

I deal with oversupply, too! My milk also comes in early. It's funny you mention nursing 2 overnight- that's why we nightweaned DD1 during my last pregnancy...that's the one thing that freaks me out about tandem nursing, too! I figure we'll give nightweaning a shot when DD is about 18 months, so in about 5 more months.

Nursing 2

I am currently nursing my just-turned 3 year old and my almost 1 1/2 year old. When I was pregnant with my second, I night weaned my dd when she was about 18 months old (using Dr. Jay Gordon's night weaning schedule, very gentle) and I was about 6 months pregnant. My milk never dried up during that pregnancy, and my newborn ds actually got regular milk for the first day and a half or so, and then my colostrum came in, and then back to milk. My 3 year old still nurses up to 5 times a day, usually either before she goes to bed (she doesn't nurse to sleep) or when she wakes up. I am in the early process of night weaning my ds. I am planning on making some changes to the sleep arrangements before the baby comes, so I know I will need lots of time to do it. The first step is nightweaning my ds.

As for whether or not I see myself nursing 3 when the baby comes? Hopefully not. Libby will turn 4 a month after the baby comes, so hopefully she is getting to where she will wean on her own soon. Since I am nightweaning Hudson so early in my pregnancy, I can see my milk drying up this time, and if that happens I'm sure she will wean. If not, I will have to do some gentle persuading. I want to give her the chance to do it on her own first, though.

Nursing my 21 month old but not much.

We night weaned at 17 months (Jay Gordon) and I limit his daytime nursing to mornin in bed, before nap, and before bed. We are working on cutting the nap one.

If it was up to him he would still nursing every 2 hours around the clock, btu it was driving me crazy. Esp. now that I am pg I really want him weaned completely but I may decide to keep nursing once or twice a day since I think it is still pretty important to him.

OTOH it is tempting to get him totally weaned 6ish months before new baby so that I am not tandeming and he doesn't associate new baby with "his" nursies.

I've heard from friends and my SIL who have tandem nursed that they found tandeming actually helped make the transition easier, not harder. It was really sweet watching my friend's 22 month old tandeming for the first time, as he reached over and stroked his baby brother's head while they were nursing.

Obviously it is ultimately up to you and whatever works best for your family but I thought I would throw that out there as it was originally a worry of mine as well.

Ditto!! My daughter obviously didn't wean during my last pregnancy, but tandem nursing has really been a much more pleasant experience for all of us than I'd ever expected.

My DS1 has life threatening food allergies. No dairy, eggs or peanuts for us. I made it through pregnancy #2 without eating dairy, eggs, nuts and seafood (as we werent sure about seafood yet). DS2 has no allergies. So since we don't keep any dairy, eggs or nuts in the house, I won't be eating them during my 3rd pregnancy. What is she allergic to?

I'm nursing my allergic 22 month old dd--eggs, dairy, and peanuts (though we don't do any nuts at all). She nurses around the clock and very frequently at night so I don't foresee her weaning during the pregnancy, which is fine with me. I'd love to be able to splurge and go out for pizza before the next baby is born, in case he/she has allergies too, but I'll survive. We go back to the allergist in August so I'm hoping for good news. Dh outgrew his egg allergy between 2 and 3 so we hope that happens with dd as well. I ate terribly during my last pregnancy so I'm actually looking forward to being healthier this time around. I'm a little worried about nutrition, especially if my blood sugar gets funny (I "had" GD last time even though it was controlled by diet, was put on unnecessary meds that I ended up being allergic to, all sorts of fun stuff), but I'm working on it!

its so good to know i'm not the only one!!! :
She's had life threatening reactions to eggs and nuts. She is also allergic to dairy, wheat, soya, oats and various fruit and veg. I am most concerned about calcium but I am now boosting tghat through bone broths, spinach and trying out other different sources. Did you take any supplements? I'm trying not to as most of the supplements have things like soya etc.

WOW! IRL I have never found anyone with DS1 allergies! HI!
At 3 yrs old we had DS1 re-tested and he was still allergic to dairy, eggs and peanuts, and added dustmites, cat and dog. He shows no signs of outgrowing. Allergist thought he would outgrow egg by 2-3... but not for us. I was boarderline GD with DS2 and midwife gave be rx for glucose meter, so I too have to get on the ball with what my levels can and can't be. I am beginning to think of some high protein snacks... I know I am going to need some. (I might start a new thread about dietary restrictions).

I took Flintstones completes with DS1 and DS2 because I can't swallow pills I might take a calcium supplement this time too. i try to find high calcium foods (fortified OJ, and these bread things were 30% calcium... plus kale kale kale).

Not that I would wish allergies on anyone, but I'm glad there are so many of us! I know a few local mommies whose kids have the same allergies as dd, but none of them are nursing their allergic child, so things that apply to me don't really apply to them. Of course, I think a few of them have younger babies who are nursing that are NOT allergic, so that gives me hope at least!

I'm taking prenatals and a D supplement because my D was low in April, but I should probably be taking a calcium supplement too. I need to see if my midwife can write me a new prescription for test strips so I can start monitoring my blood sugar! My A1C was fine in April, fortunately.

Yah it probably would be easier. But I don't really want to be nursing him anymore. And since I don't let him nurse during the day anymore I don't know how much tandeming would really help.

I wish I could be a mother earth goddess but frankly I want the little leech off my body, IYKWIM.
