Does there need to be any extra layers of PUL or whatever? Or does 100% wool soak anything up?

Thanks for that awesome link! My last question is: is it cheaper to make or buy the wool covers? I assume make, but I really know nothing about the price of wool. And if I buy the wool, do I need to treat it with lanolin? Or does the untreated stuff have enough natural lanolin in it already?
I guess I'll have to have some on hand anyway to treat them when I wash them.

The covers (soakers) you buy ready made may cost more, but there's quite a bit of work and time that go into each one (as you'll discover when you knit your own!) and the makers usually price according to the cost of the actual yarn and the time it takes to knit.
Most wool yarn has been so processed that there's very little lanolin left. It's a good idea to wash/lanolize anything you buy or make before using it.
