Induction Story

Hello Everyone!

I'm 40w4d and 5 cm/75% effaced without any contractions. I have pelvic organ prolapse so I'm very uncomfortable. I have tried castor oil 4x over the past two weeks. I've walked until I'm exhausted. Natural remedies do not seem to be working. They are going to break my water tomorrow morning.

I was wondering if you would be willing share your success rates with artificial rupture of membranes and/or induction stories to comfort me.

I had a perfect delivery following AROM. I was 40 weeks 5 days by my chart, and 41 weeks 2 days by the 1st trimester ultrasound dating, the date they used.

I was also 4-5 cm already, without being in labor, though I had been having contractions the entire pregnancy..

That hospital still did enemas as a general rule, and since we were attempting an induction, I didn't have a problem with that (just one more thing that could possibly help things along). So I got the enema, and a while later the doc broke my water. Nothing happened for the first 30 minutes. Then some regular contractions started. Not really any harder than what I'd been having for weeks.

But then, 2 1/2 hours later, it was all done and over with, she was born. I moved around a lot during labor, used the exercise ball and rotated my hips. I was on hands and knees for comfort at one point, and that was when I felt the baby move down, and let dh know it was soon. Then there was the commotion of the nurse coming to check, then rushing to get the doc. I delivered in a squatting position, and it took two contractions to get her out. It was kind of funny because at the the pushing stage, the contractions went back to having a few minutes in between. That was a very long and boring 4 minutes waiting for the next contraction, when you're already pushing.

It was all very straightforward, a good experience. I was surprised at how exhausted I was directly after she was born, since the labor was only 2 1/2 hours, and I only pushed for 2 contractions. Baby was healthy and great.

I was induced at 42 weeks with baby 3.
The NST did not look too good, so that's why we did it.
Pitocin was started around 11am. DS was born around 1:30PM
From what you say, your body seems to be just ripe enough for a successful induction if needs be!
I am not sure about AROM because some women don't go into labor after having it done. I had my bags ruptured afte being in hard labor with my first for 14 hours with no progress. Transition kicked in immediately after.

I've had 2 pitocin induced births (otheriwse unmedicated). As long as a reasonable protocol for the pit is followed (slow increases, then turned down or off once labor is "established") it's not the worse thing ever. Sounds like you have a very favorable Bishop's Score.

I had AROM with my 1st baby. I was post dates and also about 4-5cm and about 80% effaced, no contractions for me, either. I had also tried castor oil with no success. So we did the AROM (it kicked things into gear IMMEDIATELY!) and I labored at home for as long as possible, which turned out to be shorter than I'd hoped. I fully admit, it was VERY painful, and so I wasn't willing to move around much (which likely would have progressed things much faster/easier, but I was too scared). I never want to labor without intact waters again (the next time I was able to, and it was SO much better). However, the thing was, it worked, obviously. I did end up with an epidural, which I'd wanted to avoid, but I had a VERY quick and easy recovery, checked out of the hospital only about 12 hours after she was born, and everything was great!

Good luck to you!!

Thank you so much for sharing! You've given me a lot of encouragement with your success stories. My Bishop's score is 14 so that is favorable. :

I had an AROM only induction with baby #3. Was only 3cm dilated. Broke water, walked the halls, squatted a lot, and rocked on the birth ball for about 3-4 hours. Got contractions going and baby was born shortly after. I'd had two previous pit births so didn't want to go that route. My contractions were never terribly painful until transition even with the broken bag of waters.
Good luck!

I was induced at 41w 2d last time around and I had a great birth experience. Everyone I knew had told me horror stories about pitocin, but my experience was great.

I labored for about 13 hours without pain relief medications. Labor wasn't painful for the first several hours. Once they broke my waters, then things intensified and I quickly became more uncomfortable. Transition was tough, but right after I asked for some kind of pain relief I started to feel the urge to push. They told me it was too late for anything but an epidural, which I didn't want, so I told them no thanks and kept going. It didn't take long after that before I was pushing my baby out (which, by the way, felt soooo much better than transition!). I think I pushed for about 20 minutes.

Afterward, I held my precious girl to my breast. She nursed. I felt like I had just saved the world. It was the most incredible natural high - there's nothing like it!

You'll be great!

Everything went fabulous and I only had a 3.5 hour labor!

On Tuesday, June 30, after another visit to the doctor, I was found to be the same dilatation and effacement with zero contractions. He stripped my membranes to see if he could stir anything up. We planned to go to the hospital at 7 am the next morning and have him break my water. I tried some natural induction methods that night to no avail. We had a great night of rest and went in to the hospital at 6:30 am. When we arrived the staff was busy with an emergency c-section so we were told to make ourselves comfortable in our room. At 8:00 the nurse came in and started an IV with antibiotics and began monitoring me to see if I was having any contractions. The doc arrived at 8:30 and broke my water. I was monitored on my side for 30 minutes to make sure the baby handled it ok. At 9:00 am we were told to go for a walk and then be back in an hour for monitoring. We walked around the hospital together and contractions started around 9:30 am. They started fairly mild and continued in strength until we arrived back in our room at 10:00. At 10:30, I got in the tub. The tub was AWESOME! The jets and warm water were perfect. Around 10:30 am the contractions began to get intense and require complete concentration to get through them. I labored on hands and knees leaning over the edge of the tub. At 12:00 the doc checked me (in the tub) and said I was 6 cm/90% effaced but my cervix was posterior. This was a little discouraging since the contractions were very hard. I told Eric I wanted an epidural because I was thinking this was going to go on for 4-6 more hours at least. From 12:00 - 1:00 the contractions were very painful and intense. I started showing signs of transition around 12:15 (nausea, emotion, etc). At 12:50, a nurse checked me in the tub and said I was complete!! They wanted me out of the tub. I made it to the bed and laid on my side without any contractions! Thank the LORD for that wonderful break. Doc checked me and said I was only 9 cm with a lip of the cervix still in the way. He sat on the edge of the bed next to me and pushed the cervix out of the way with the next couple of contractions. No airplane headlights. No stirrups. It was wonderful! Once the cervix was out of the way, they told me I could start pushing. It was VERY INTENSE and PAINFUL but I only had to push 4 times!!! It was amazing. She was born at 1:11 pm...only 3 1/2 hours after the first contractions!!
