diaper rash question

Thread Starter
We have been using CDs for well over a year now and never had a problem. About 1 month ago, DD developed severe redness in the diaper area with a few small raised bumps. A day later, her skin was excoriated and still hasn't fully healed. It is not getting worse and in fact, looks much better but won't totally heal. If I put her in disposables for a day or two she looks better. Once we start using the the CDs, the area tends to start to redden.

I keep thinking its the dipes but I've tried everything I can think of to properly clean them/rid them of the rash but I'm still at a loss including numerous hot water washes, using grapefruit seed extract. I will try putting them in the sun today (its been a very rainy/cloudy month in NE). Any suggestions?

You may have already tried stripping them with Dawn--but if not--maybe give that a try.

It may be your detergent?

And if the stripping doesn't/hasn't worked boiling for 5-10 minutes has always worked for us.

What kind of material is touching her skin? Some babies have an allergy to poly fabrics, such as suedecloth or fleece, while others need that to wick moisture away to help prevent rashes.

If you have stripped them already, you could try boiling. I am a huge fan of the sun. Best disinfectant in the world. However, leave them out for a day or two. Maybe do another wash/rinse until there are no suds and then leave them in the sun to dry. That seems to work well.

Good luck. Rashes are no fun!

natural or synthetics next to baby?
you may have a synthetic intolerance. about 50% seem to.

I have been experiencing something similar....
my ds has a bit of redness that comes and goes, but never really goes away...and 2 weekends ago we went away and I put him in disposable's and voila...no rash.
I use only cotton fitted's unbleached pf and hemp fitted so no synthetics.
I tried the dawn and then just using less detergent. I am wondering if , since I have a front loader I should just do a hot wash without any soap/detergent??
what would I use to help wick away moisture?

When we had that problem, we put DS in sposies for a few days and stripped all of his cloth diapers with dawn. Make sure to do a hot water rinse with hot hot hot water. You may want to consider cotton/organic diapers if it's an allergy to suedecloth or something. And/or try another detergent. For sure strip the dipes and do hot water rinses though. That helps us!
