using milk kefir for making yogurt ????

Thread Starter
Hello, I've only been making milk kefir for 3 months, gave some grains today to a friend who asked me if she can use the fermented milk to make yogurts ?

has anyone tried this ?
would the low heat of the yogurt maker kill all of the good bacteria ?

thanks to you if you can give any answer to that question !

Yogurt and kefir are completely different things so the short answer is no, you can't use kefir to make yogurt. You could strain your kefir to thicken it up though and it would seem like yogurt (different taste but maybe a similar consistency) but it's still different bacteria, yeast, etc.

Would straining it remove a lot of the beneficial bacteria and nutrients? I would like to thicken it sometimes too, to use instead of yogurt.

It shouldn't be any worse than straining yogurt. You'll use some nutritional value but you can use the whey in a recipe, for soaking grains, etc.
