So really the only way I could afford daycare was if I quit working, but then why would I need it?

We did that cycle years ago, lol. I really don't understand the reasoning. When our oldest was born the cheapest daycare I could find was $400/wk for infants. Yup, $400 a week - $1600 a month. I had to be working in order to apply for child care assistance. BUT If I did work and made enough to cover ONLY the childcare, I made too much. But no job I could find even covered the childcare costs at the time. Then I decided to work AT that childcare, I had no other options and they gave discounted childcare. ($90 a week per child... but crappy wages)
The way the system is set up bites.
A hint for anyone who recently lost a job.. check out your state's dislocated workers program. My husband lost his job in February so its been tight. But since so many people lost jobs in our area he has not been able to find another one at all in his field, or any field. McDonald's isn't even hiring. After checking with the job center he qualifies for the dislocated workers program. They will pay for 2 years of college/degree in a new career field and if we need childcare to be able to do that, they pay for it along with transportation. He gets unemployment and I work as well, that program isn't based on what you make (although we're pretty low income anyways and couldn't afford for him to go to school any other way).
I will say this, our area is set up pretty well as far as resources to help low income families... if you know how to access them. Almost everyone in our area is pretty low income, its a low CoL area.
