playing with cat litter

My kitten is litterbox trained and has been doing really well. The only problem is that he likes to play in this litter box. He digs and scratches and dives. And, comes out really smelly. He's not doing to great bathing himself. Any ideas.

PS- he loves to lick us. Is he asking for us to clean him the same way he's cleaning us?

Some cats just love playing in their litterboxes.

With the cleaning - I've noticed that often they become better at cleaning themselves as they get a little older (this is just a kitten right?)

We use Alpine Pine. We are fostering some kittens and they came with kitty litter on them and cemented on their paws. After they figured out the Alpine Pine box was where they were supposed to go there wasn't any problem. I don't think it's as much fun to play in.

RE: bathing the kitten, they do get better at bathing themselves, but I started bathing our cat about once every 6-8 weeks from the time we brought him home. Mostly this is because I find that it keeps him very tame and 'kid proof'. I've also made it a point to do things that unknowing toddlers would do... pet kitty while he's eating, pull (gently) on his tale, pick him up upside down. Never to the point of torturing the cat, but just to help him be mellow, it has worked great!
