My little one has arrived . . .

Millicent Edith "Millie" was born on Monday, June 29, 7lbs 8oz, 20 1/2 in. My water broke at 6:15 AM, I was in active labor by 12:00 PM, and we were holding our little girl at 3:49 PM.

Labor was intense and very empowering. I was able to stick up for myself at the hospital and avoid any interventions. I still can't believe I had the natural childbirth of my dreams (thanks to my awesome DH and fantastic nurse).

Now for my mini vent:
While I was still in triage, not even admitted to L&D yet, the on-staff CNM was already telling me that I needed to start pitocin immediately because my water had broken! I told her that I didn't want to discuss it at all until the 12 hour mark. She proceeded to tell me (in an irritated tone) that I was putting my baby at an increased risk of infection and that if I wouldn't be willing to talk about pitocin until 6 PM "hopefully I wouldn't be too exhausted to get through labor at that point." : I think there is a time and a place for pitocin, but it shouldn't be pushed on every patient who walks through the door! Why are hospitals such pitocin peddlers?

Congrats on your baby girl!

I agree that the nurse pushing pitocin as soon as you walked in the door is both annoying and weird. Good job on standing up to her!

Congrats on having your natural hospital birth!!! Welcome Millie!!!

I don't know why they push pit so much.. but I had an adverse reaction to it with DS1, and am so terrified that they would do it again if I was transferred to the hossy!

Yay! Congrats!!!!

I've heard that around 80% of births are now Pitocin augmented. Good job sticking up for yourself. I did have my water broken for 48 hours before my baby was born and there was NO infection problem at all, so it is possible.

Congrats on your birth. Hope your recovery is going well.

Big congratulations and well done you Momma! As far as the whys of Pitocin....well drug companies make more money the more the drug is used and of course insurance companies cover it. For the record-- my mother labored for 27 hours, in a hospital, with her water broke, and never had an infection. The infection line is a fear tactic, yes infections happen, but not nearly as often or as quickly as hospital staff might make you believe and of course the less frequently they do internal exams the fewer infections there are as well!

I am so impressed with your personal strength-- you had the birth you wanted and now you also have a lovely addition to your family, what a great celebration for you!
