Juno is here

I was more a lurker than a poster on this board but did post a few times

My second daughter, Juno Athena, was born June 15th at 41 weeks, weighing 7Ibs 14oz and 53cm long. I had nearly 2 weeks of prodromal labour and was beginning to think I would be pregnant forever when I woke up on Monday the 15th with definite contractions. By 1.30pm we were on the way to the hospital. My contractions were bearable but strangely spaced. i would have 5-7minutes between contractions and then one 2 minutes later.

It was lunchtime and there were few midwives on the delivery floor so that coupled with the clerks having trouble finding my chart meant I wasn't checked until 3.15. At that stage, the lovely midwife informed me that while baby's head was right down, and things were ready to go, I wasn't actually in active labour. I just wanted to cry. SO we started walking the halls. Within 5 minutes the powerful contractions had started and I was moaning through them. By 3.45 I told DH to get me entonox as my contractions were on top of each other and I was again going through back labour.

By 4 I was on entonox (gas and air) and in heaven. The student midwife realised that things were going very quickly when I didn't stop sucking on the mouthpiece and that my contractions were pretty much nonstop. They were so powerful (the entonox doesn't take away the pain with me, just makes it easy to get into good breathing rhythms and does take the edge and fear away). My main midwife arrived at 4.20 and realised I must be near 10cm. She was wonderful and so encouraging. Loved the fact that my waters were still intact and I didn't have ARM as it made her job easier. At 4.30 I was at 10 and pushing. 2 pushes later I felt my waters bulge (though initially it was the head crowning) and then the pop as they broke. That was so wierd but great. And at 5.13, Juno was born. I felt so in control, even with the intensity of the contractions and the midwife was great and helping me work well with each push but didn't fuss me if I needed to breath through one.

Juno was born with both hands around her face and already trying to cry even before her body was born. She apparently spiralled out of me. She latched on fairly quickly afterwards and breastfeeding has been easier with her, than with dd1 (though we are just getting over a bout of thrush). She is perfect and just gorgeous with a small mop of sandy brown hair. SAsha, my first born, is in love with her and brilliant, though we do have to remind her to be gentle and try not to lift Juno up. Hopefully this closeness will remain as they grow up.

We are enjoying the early days though Juno did have a very painful bum from the thrush. She has settled down again today and just loves looking around with her huge grey eyes.

Hope all the June babies are doing fabulously and congrats to all the mums.
