Inexpensive newborn solution...

Little boy #2 is on his way this fall! I just ordered a bunch of the new Fuzzi Bunz one size (which look awesome, by the way), but as adjustable as they are, I don't think they're going to cut it for a newborn. I hate to spend a lot of money on a newborn stash since they grow so quickly...so this is my plan: buy the bare minimum of newborn covers and use the small infant inserts/doublers that they include in the OS diapers (I have about 30 inserts total, 1/2 from this batch of brand new diapers, 1/2 never used from DS #1's OS pocket dipes).

Does this sound do-able?
Any recommendations for economical newborn covers?
What's a good minimum number of covers?

Thanks for the input!!

Are you talking about using the inserts without the diapers? Could be workable, UNLESS the inserts are microfiber. You don't want microfiber up against skin.

Oooh...thanks for the heads up! Yes, they are microfiber. Had no idea that those weren't suitable for next to baby's skin.

Ah well, I guess I could still use those inserts as doublers. It won't set me back too much to get some natural fiber inserts or prefolds.

Still looking for newborn cover recommendations...

Microfiber is a no-no because it is soooo absorbant, it will pull the natural moisture and oils right out of the skin!!!

I plan to go with prefolds.

For covers, I'm a Thirsties kind of gal. The xs is great for nb, fits up to 12 lbs and the gussets really keep stuff in.

Lots of people like Proraps and they are pretty cheap. I think sometimes you can even call the company to get seconds (which are still perfectly functional, but even cheaper!).

I got used newborn prefolds and xs thirsties from a mama on diaperswappers. they hadn't arrived yet when my son was born (he was 3 weeks early). I'd received 2 nb proraps as a gift and used those with some cotton/hemp doublers or old soft washcloths for the first few days until the dipes came. worked fine.

i preferred thirsties to proraps.
check diaperswappers for used prefolds and covers...cheap, easy to use and easy to care for plus they wear like iron. we also used the nb prefolds as extra fuzzibunz stuffing when he needed extra nighttime absorbency.

For newborn covers I like proraps then bummis once the cord is off.

But I've never tried thirsties.

It depends on the size of your lo. My dd is ten weeks old and nine pounds. She is long and skinny and just now fits into the thirsties xs. We had to use proraps at first.

Personally I would not use micro's in the diapering area, not because it is too absorbent but because a natural fiber will be the superior choice for the skin condition and what the skin is absorbing into the body. Someone recently posted this link here and it is worthy of posting again: http://www.diaperpin.com/clothdiaper...lmaterials.asp

You don't need to buy new covers, often times you will be able to find excellent condition used newborn covers that will serve you very well for a fraction of the new pricing.

I have had luck here in the distant past -

or try at diaper swappers for resale newborn items.

Hemp, Cotton, Bamboo are always a good choice for inserts or prefolds in a variety of fabric choices.

Contour diapers in newborns may also offer you a fit.
