I don't have much to report. Have some tomato flowers. Squash are really, really slow to germinate/grow. It's still in the low 50's at night. I'm having a strange month. Turns out I'm pregnant, again (I've known for a while). Hubby got laid off yesterday. So no money coming in. The very few jobs he's found to apply for are not here. So we may have to move. Away from the garden we've been working on for years - throughout pregnancies even. If we have to move I will be a sobbing mess.

Subbing!

As I posted, some of my tomato, cuke, and squash plants are getting nailed by some kind of bug I think. Beetles someone suggested and I agree. What can I dooooo? *tear*

Rest of the garden is going well, although most of my dill died during the heat wave

This is the first year we have ever had cucumber beetles. I didn't know what they were at first. I thought it was just a ladybug, but then i found tons of them today. Two days ago i tried peppermint with water spray but that didnt work. Unless i can find something else i'll have to find a organic insecticide. Any suggestions so Lindsay and I don't loose our veggies.

cucumber beetles look like ladybugs!?!? Are they yellow instead of red/orange? If so Arrrrrrrghhhhhhhh! I'm new to this gardening gig, guess I best google those little beasts!

ETA: SPLAT...yes, those were they. So cute & harmless they looked in the garden ... I never connected them to the complete demise of my zucchini plants that were doing so well! *sigh* Must.wage.war! lol

Oh Lanna . First, congratulations!! Second, I am so sorry for your DH. That really, really sucks. I hope and pray that everything will turn out alright for you. Is there anyway you can sell some of your garden produce or the stuff you have put up?

Joining in. We've got green tomatoes on the vine. The squash plants are sprawling everywhere. And we have more green beans than we know what to do with.

My garden is just blooming (literally too) right now! Once the rain quit and the temp went up, the plants went crazy. Everything's flowering and my tomatoes are just huge! I'll have to get some pictures.

First off, congratulations on the pregnancy. Second, huge hugs. I hope your DH finds a job quickly, and you do not have to leave your garden. I'd be a mess, too.

As for gardening, our weather here in WI sounds a lot like the weather in Idaho this week. So, we had frost warnings through mid-June, then the last week of June was horribly hot (nighttime temps in the 80's!), and now we're back to 60's during the day and 50's at night.

My spring veggies, which were wilting in the heat last week, are happy again this week. My summer veggies, which should be taking off by now, are languishing. What a crazy year this is!

It is a stressful time, mama. I am there with you on being pregnant, worrying about money, etc. I am hoping all will work out okay for all of us.

I think the bees are avoiding the honeydew. I have seen so many immature melons turn yellow, shrivel, and die. Now I am noticing dead bees on the driveway. What is going on?? I am so worried about the bees ! I wonder if I have a dangerous neighbor spraying plants or something.

At any rate, I will be out this morning hand pollinating to see if I can get some success.

Everything else is doing fine. My corn, which was blown over in the wind, has stood back up for the most part, and I see some corn actually coming in.

Lemon Cucumbers are taking over my cucurbit bed.

Congratulations and so sorry at the same time. Hopefully a job will come up very soon.

I have seen beetle catchers at Lowes. They looked like plastic bags on a metal pole.

Though all my gardening books say to pick them off or use a shop vac to suck them off. They also suggest using some sort of cover until plants are a little larger.

Here we just harvested all our corn, we got a few cantaloupes and watermelons too. I am also drowning in cucumbers. Though my bush beans have been a real dud and our watermelon had really thick rinds.

I'm going to need everything that comes from the garden this year with a budget of $400/mo to feed 5+ people. If it had been a better year, possibly, but I'm still going to have to bargain and forage around the neighborhood to get what I need. Luckily our finances are doing pretty well (well, better than a few years ago!), so our only true debts are student loans and the mortgage and then the regular monthly utilities and such, plus we have some cushion in our checking account. We're going to sell our car we've had for a year and a half, put that money in the bank and limp along in the much smaller, older car that hubby uses as his commuter. We'll get a big enough car closer to when #4 comes or after he gets another job, whenever.

Oh, and I wouldn't be able to sell anything canned from my pantry without getting my kitchen licensed by whoever (state? feds?). Which ain't gonna happen for a variety of reasons.

Yup. My peas are still pretty happy, as is the cold-frame lettuce. But the beans and all squash? Oy. Not so pretty.

Well, I'm not *as* freaking out about moving as I was. If hubby gets the job that sounds about perfect, but is in the middle of nowhere, I actually found a place for sale up there in our budget, on a bigger lot, with a greenhouse, shed, lean-to (for firewood!), garden space, and fruit trees. Dude. I'd totally be taking half of what we've planted down here (berries, possibly asparagus, etc.), but still. So it's not as bad as it could be. So, we'll see... I have some friends proofing hubby's resume and cover letter before we send it out shortly.

Good thing I had that crazy urge to have the big-@$$ pantry. Now we'll see where my shortfalls are - already realized I had no canned corn (and none in the freezer). *sigh* Have close to a year's supply of some things, so at least there's that.

Going well. Lost those squash and pumpkins to the squash bugs and had to replant some winter squash plants. have been canning up a storm with the harvest, trying watermelon pickle rines today. Also got a hoe to get at those huge weeds/grass. what a lot of work but soooo worth it!
Here are some pics pre hoe! Loving the garden life:

I just pulled all my radishes since they weren't tasting good anymore. The cow sure liked them though!

I was so excited to find baby zucchini's! We keep having windstorms and my plants are not liking it at all. I still can't get my peas back up, one of my peppers was flattened and my biggest tomato plant won't stand up either now.

Got a June start on my garden so nothing harvested yet. Our huge project now is growing Cabernet Grapes for a local vineyard. They just installed the irrigation infrastructure for 11 rows. The grower will have baby vines in 2 weeks time. We have lots to learn but will have the winery assist the vines over the first year. The go dormant during winter so no watering ...a plus!

I have a question, mamas.

I have an heirloom tomato plant (Hillbilly) that's been in the garden since May 15. It's not getting enough sun, so it's tall and spindly. It has produced LOTS of flowers for over a month but I've yet to see a tomato starting to grow.

Is it going to produce at all? I swear, sometimes I am tempted to just pull the thing.

Many heirloom tomatoes take a long time to actually produce. One of mine is just now starting to produce. We had flowers for a long time and finally fruit!
