Shelf life is different depending on type of nut/seed and how they've been stored. In a pantry with temperature fluctuations, usually 1 year is max, some will only last a few months. But in the fridge or freezer most will last indefinitely. If you're concerned about it, let them come to room temp, and then stick your nose in there. If they smell rancid, dump them.

For nuts that I use often (like pecans), I just keep them in the cabinet - they rarely last more than 6 weeks. Everything else gets stored in the freezer just because I don't use it fast enough.
