fabric choices for mamma cloth, what to use?

I'm making some mamma cloth. I've used flannel.. but can I use other types of fabric for the tops or bottoms...? Like 100% cotton.. bamboo velour...fleece? What should not be used?

What do you do for the absorbant part? I've used cotton flannel, but my homemade ones don't do NEARLY as well as my various WAHM purchased ones. any ideas? For the bottom, I'm looking for something like one I purchased, its a fulled knitted wool. I almost always just use quilting cotton for the tops. Another bottom option (it works well, but I prefer all-natural) is that no pill mini fleece stuff. (I admit, it makes a good pad, but I just prefer everything to be all natural.

I like jersey or terry for the top layer, not fleece or flannel, because I don't like the thought of lint

I have minkee or fleece as tops and bottoms on mine. And fleece for the inserts. This made it easy for me. I don't have a serger so I just cut them to size, they won't unravel. I've never had any problems. They've he;d up excellently. Though I do change very frequently as a personal choice, so maybe they wouldn't do well otherwise, idk? And I wash them alone, so I've not had any lint.

I just bought some really soft bamboo knit on clearance at JoAnns for $3.00 a yard (it's 50% off clearance through the 18th).

I use bamboo or hemp as the inner soaker, and bamboo velour or flannel for the top layer.

I put PUL on the bottom of some for heavier days, and nothing on the bottom for lighter days.

I like using hemp/cotton fleece for the absorbant layers. Tops I typically use flannel because it's absorbant and I don't find that it leaves lint.

I know mamas who've used velour, cotton knit, or other softer materials for the tops.

For backing I like using fleece to help prevent leakage. I have heavy, heavy periods at times and I like using PUL and fleece to ensure that I don't leak.
