Help with First Easy Quilt

Thread Starter
I'm hosting a blessingway in September and wanted to give the mom a keepsake from all the attendees. I was thinking to give each attendee a square of fabric to decorate/embroider and then sew it all together and make it into a quilt/blanket type thing. I've never done this before and don't want to make a mess of it after I've started sewing the pieces.

Can anyone give me suggestions on how to do this the easiest way possible?

TIA!

If you just do squares, it's pretty easy. I did my first (and so far only) quilt like that --an I Spy quilt for my daughter. I sewed squares into rows, then sewed the rows together. Added a border at the top and bottom and had my quilt top.

For the quilting part, I just ran it through my sewing machine, sewing over the seams between squares. There's lots of places that will do a proper job of it for you with a real quilting machine -- just ask at a local quilting supply store. A smallish quilt will run about $50 (in my experience).
