Hiya,

Im wanting to expose my son to another type of movie - he needs more than transformers and spongebob - Im trying to remember old movies I saw but am coming up blank outside of Old Yeller. Even OY, I cant remember if its too grown up for him.

Classic movie hits at our house for that age are Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, the original Pippi Longstocking movies, The Jungle Book, The Sword and the Stone, and Annie. That's off the top of my head right now. I'm sure there are more.

The Yearling, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0039111/

Or for the more sophisticated, the french films, the Red Balloon and White Mane http://www.janusfilms.com/redandwhite/index.html

I second Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Also, Pete's Dragon.

Not super old, but how about The Neverending Story? My all time childhood favorite. And the sequel was pretty good too.

Hmm... Other than that, I'm pretty much drawing a blank right now as well.

We like a lot of what has been mentioned. The kids also really like the LOTR cartoons made back in the 70's.

The Secret of NIHM

Rikki Tikki Tavi

The Parent Trap

There were some Narnia films done by the BBC but I am not sure how good they are.

Here are some classics that have been big hits for us:

Wizard of Oz
Duck Soup or Horse Feathers
Assorted Laurel and Hardy shorts. Also, sadly, she LOVES the Three Stooges.
The Cocteau version of Beauty and the Beast -- if you don't mind having to read the subtitles aloud for him
Lassie Come Home
National Velvet
Magnificent Seven (rather violent for a five-year-old though -- I think my daughter didn't see it until she was seven)
True Grit
The Black Stallion
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
Treasure Island
Brigadoon
A Christmas Carol, the one with Alistaire Sim
Several old Fred Astaire movies we stumbled on at TCM -- I think Stage Door was one of them, any should be fine.

We just saw the Shirley Temple version of Heidi, and she LOVED that!

Try the 1938 film "The Adventures of Robin Hood" with Errol Flynn! I love this movie as well - he was such a hunk.

Where the Red Fern Grows
White Fang
Polyanna
Hello Dolly
Gigi

The channel TMC has a program called TMC Jr which is designed to introduce children to classic movies that are appropriate for them. I know one of them included in their list was American in Paris. My 2 year old watched it with us last week and he loved the dancing at the end. He was dancing for two days after.

Does anyone remember a movie called Electric Grandmother (or something like that?) my neighbor a long time ago had a copy of it and I loved to watch it every time I went over there.. alas, my library doesn't have it.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083876/

I second (or third) bedknobs and broomsticks- especially I loved the marching knight costumes..

what about that fairly recent movie about the baby Loch Ness monster? hmm.. can't recall the name of that either. The little boy finds an egg, and hatches it, etc

The Water Horse

Willy the Sparrow

It's very sweet. Our public library had a VHS copy dubbed into English.

Also my two (espec. DS1) watched Brave Little Toaster. Endlessly.

Buster Keaton's The General

Oh - my kids haven't seen any of these, and I really enjoyed the last two as a kid.

I didn't care for the one I saw (TLTW&TW), but dd1 and ds2 loved it, and so do my sister's three youngest (7 year old boy & 6 year old b/g twins).

I really like the Goonies. Big fan! But I think there are some scary scenes in it for a five year old.. the guy chained up in the basement, the robbers trying to stick the one boys' hand in the blender, the older boy being drug on a little kids bike by a car, finding Mr. Copperbottom's Copperpot's? rotting corpse, and then there are the sexual references- the statue, and the Spanish "translation" (um, some 5yo could read that I think- or maybe already speak Spanish).

I got the movie for my stepson, but not until he had started middle school I think.

Personally the "confession" about the vomit and the movie theater was what kept me up at night! Yuck!
