breastfeeding and hypothyroid

Thread Starter
I'm due in August with our first and have been really careful with my thyroid levels throughout my pregnancy. I'm hypothyroid, Hashimotos. Baby is doing great.

Recently though I have been reading about complications with breastfeeding.. women saying that their milk supply is low, and their levels went crazy after birth and they became hyperthyroid. I was wondering if anyone here has experienced this, or has suggestions/advice for staying on top of things. I'm in between endocrinologists (and they seem more thyroid focused, than baby focused) and am worried something will get overlooked.
Just need to know what questions to ask/what to look out for.

Thanks so much!

I also have Hashimotos. I got bloodwork taken every four weeks postpartum. My dose gradually decreased. I never had trouble with low milk supply...I actually had trouble with too much milk in the beginning. I was able to nurse for 3.5 years and tandem nurse for a year...and with my second daughter I am still nursing and she is two.....no troubles.

I have hypothyroid too. I take synthroid and get my levels checked about every 3 months. My suppy is good and always has been. I stopped taking the pills for a month. My supply was still good but I got really depressed so I started taking them again. I should have kept taking them I dont know what I was thinking.

I am hypothyroid and take Armour. I have enough milk that I am pumping to donate. This is my second baby and last time was the same story...

I'm hypothyroid and noticed dips in my supply if I miss a dose of my Cytomel. make sure you get both a free T4 and T3 blood level done.

I have hashimotos (20 years diagnosed) and I have been able to breastfeed all of my children for 3+ years. Good luck!

I did have a lower milk supply, but I believe that was due to stress and diabetes, not hypothyroid.

My dd has now been nursing for more than 4 years.

I'm hypothyroid and never had any trouble with my milk supply. DD has nursed for 2 yrs at this point. Just get your levels checked often and nurse, nurse, nurse that baby!

I also have Hashi's. My levels did fluctuate with my middle pregnancy when I was taking Synthroid. With my last pregnancy I was on Armour and my levels stayed perfect all through pregnancy and pp. My milk supply was/is always very abundant! So much so that poor baby was choking and refluxing from way too much milk.

Keep an eye on your levels every few months. You'll be fine
