Just my frickin' luck

Our lease is up. We have given our 30 day notice and I am DEEP cleaning. Like....bowels of the earth deep. I started a bit over a week ago to give myself time and good thing because 1. this house is bigger than I realized 2. dirtier than I realized (as in detailing stuff...not filth ) and 3. the female landlord has made comments as of late that lead us to believe she will be going over this house with a magnifying glass.

Our kitchen has 4 flourescent (sp?) lights. They are seperated into two sections with 2 tubes in each. They burnt out in like November. Due to the way our house is set up we haven't replaced them. There is enough extra light it wasn't a big deal. Not only that but we didn't have the money at the time. So anyway I manage to pull one down (which is a joke the way they have them inserted and covered in the ceiling) today and measure it. It's an odd length. As in 5'9. In case you are curious most places sell 4 or 8 feet. Not ones just short of 6 feet. I spent an hour and a half calling around my town tracking them down. I finally found 2 (they had to be in town as DH is out of town with our only vehicle so I was reliant on my MIL today) and only 2. I needed 4 but 2 would get us by just fine. They were the ONLY two in this entire frickin' town. The guy has sold so few of them he had forgotten he had them. Lucky for me he decided to double check before telling me a definite no. So I go down there and end up paying $24 for these two tubes. Who cares!? I'll have kitchen light and the landlord won't be pissy about it.

I got them in and cleaned up the kitchen. Went in the living room and did some things in there and maybe 30ish minutes later went to find my kitchen dark. There's also a funny smell. I then flip on the dining room light so I can remove the tubes thinking I inserted them wrong (not rocket science but you never know!) and nope. No lights.

Those stupid $24 lights burnt out my kitchen lights, my dining room lights, my laundry room light, the one above my stairs, and our microwave (not ours but THEIRS). I am so beyond livid right now. This is just my luck. Things like this happen all the time. Of course when I finally track down the ONLY two lights in all of my town in a stupid length they kill 4 areas of my home and leave a funny burning smell.

Now I get to call our landlord(s). The lady is bound to think this is indicative (based off comments in the last week) of the entire state of the house. Only the kitchen has been an issue since day one. They just picked their battles with it in regards to finances (do not blame them one bit there). I'm dreading the call in the morning. Not only that but the living room is last on my list of rooms to deep clean and thats what you walk into. Looks like it'll be a late night so that it can be done just in case he does decide to show up tomorrow. I know it's a holiday and I might get lucky and he waits til abetter day. I know him though. He won't. He'll just stop by later in the evening. You know, when it's too dark to see in my house because 4 areas worth of lights are out.

Wow. That sucks!

I don't know what to say but good luck! Sounds like the fixtures may be bad.

I hope it's just the circuit breaker tripped and maybe that one stupid fixture is shorted, not everything else.

All that cleaning should make moving afterward easy at least!

My mother rents and she has the landlord replace the lightbulbs. I've had similar rental set ups. If I were you I'd just call and say the lightbulbs are burnt out, which is true.

He knows they were. He was very surprised we just got around to replacing them (seriously odd length...even he was shocked when I told him). There is an internal wiring issue. He now plans on replacing it (with a regular size length! ) a.s.a.p. with something new (still flourescents though). From the sounds of it we got the luck of the draw and they have never had to replace these suckers. Lucky me.
