Fixing credit tips needed PLEASE!!!!

We have been wavering on clamining bankruptcy for the past few years. We don't want to. I went on to www.freecreditreport.com today and got both of our reports and scores. My score is 575 and dh's is 550. His is "very poor" and mine is "poor". My total debt is around $6000. and dh's is around $600. This is not as bad as I thought. Thankfully bankruptcy is no longer something that we are going to consder:

First off I started by disputing everything that is negative on both of our reports. There is a bunch of small stuff on both of ours that I have no clue what they are (probabily transferred stuff but I figure it can't hurt to dispute it since I am not sure) and I have one big one on mine for around $4500.

My plan is that after I hear back on the disputes whatever does not get removed I will try to contact them and settle. My other plan is to open up a secured Visa for each of us and start paying our monthly bill's with them so that we can start to actually build up our credit. As of right now neither of us has any open credit accounts (other than our car).

The one problem I don't know how to fix is that our car payment is not showing up on dh's credit report at all. He is the co-signer but it should still be on there and it's not. That would really help his score.

SO I am looking for tips and suggestions on what I can do to get our scores higher. We want to try to buy a house in March/April of next year so that only gives us 8 months to get our credit in order.

Thanks,
Amy

And the people there are really helpful. I'd be calling about his car loan though to the company. when we did our refi on our house 3yrs ago our car loan kept coming up as unpaid with a balance of $5000(it had been paid off over a year: ). I called and had to finally speak with a "manager" to get it put as paid in full. It took about 30 days if I remember right.
