Yellow squash growing before there is even a bloom

I have never planted yellow squash before, but this just looks so strange to me. I have all kinds of little tiny yellow squash growing and they have been for at least a week or more, but the blooms are just now beginning to form on the ends of them. I am sure it'll probably a bit still before they bloom too. Is this normal? I am not complaining, just curious.

Those aren't squash yet. Those are female flowers. There will be male flowers too, that are just blossoms on a stem. If the female flower gets polinated, the "mini squash" will grow into a squash.

Really? They sure look like baby squash. So if they don't get pollinated they are just going to die.

Yup.

However, they are what Mexicans use for "squash blossom soup".

If you have a bazillion of them, cut some off, saute lightly in butter and garlic and chop them into chicken broth. YUM!
