I have two good friends who are in the Peace Corps in the Cape Verde Islands. They have adopted an adorable puppy named Gus.
Gus has been sick recently, and they're concerned it might be an intestinal blockage. I listed some of the signs of that to her, and she said that the vomiting is subsiding somewhat, and that there is no straining to poop.
He hasn't had any food since Thursday, but they've been giving him some homemade pedialyte type stuff with a syringe and he's managing to keep it down.
They are no vets on their island who do surgery or even with an xray machine. They were willing to fly him to the capital, but the situation is the same there.
Does anybody have any suggestions for them?
My thoughts were:
Intestinal blockage
Random virus (maybe something that will clear up?)
I don't know if they have Parvo there, but it was an immediate thought, but having lost a puppy to Parvo, it's always my immediate thought.
Food poisoning (I know dogs don't get it often, but they CAN, right?)
Worms?
Considering that we have no idea what it is, I'm not sure what they can do to treat it, but I thought I'd see if there were any ideas here. Any other things to be on the lookout for?
Thanks so much. Keep Gus in your thoughts!
