Nuchal folds test in UK?

Hi everyone,

I am British but am living in the USA. I am coming to the UK for 4 weeks in 10 days, and will be 10.5 to 14.5 weeks pregnant while I am there. This covers all the time during which I could have the "nuchal folds" test for Downs done. Is this test done in the UK? I'll be staying with my Mum for most of the time and the nearest big hospitals are either Haverfordwest or Swansea, if anyone have any info about prenatal care in those places, that would be great also. Also, I am 40 so that's why I am concerned about this.

It is done in the UK, yes, but I have no idea where you would find a venue: there's a Spire hospital (formerly BUPA) in Cardiff, but I don't know where you'd find further over. I'd try getting your mum to talk to the community midwife at her GP's surgery, explaining the situation and asking her for a list of providers.

Hmm, that would mean telling my mum about the pregnancy, I will do that soon, I was planning to wait until after my first appointment (tomorrow) as I had a miscarriage in February and so am rather wary this time around. Also it's number 3 and I just turned 40 so...not sure what everyone's reaction will be. I am feeling so lousy at the moment, the thought of getting on a plane next week with two kids is horrendous!

As far as I understand, coverage of the test by the NHS varies from region to region. I am sure you could have it done, but you might have to pay privately for the privilege. I would make sure you have some record of care from your US midwife/ob to bring with you. Speaking with the GP who would be local to you when you're staying with your mum would be a good place to start.
