mosquitoes in my compost pile!

For the past few months, my backyard has had so many swarms of mosquitoes you'd think I lived next to a lake. I thought surely some neighbor must have standing water.

We have treated our yard with all the "natural" stuff and that has seemed to help a little bit. But yesterday my husband turned our compost pile (it is just an old fashion compost pile) and TONS and TONS of mosquitoes flew out of there.

Is there any way to treat my compost pile without killing off worms and any other helpful insects?

You need to get you compost pile hot and decomposing. It will be too hot to support mossies that way.

I'd add some fresh nitrogen - manure, grass clippings. And a layer of wet paper on top. Get that compost nice and hot.

Don't add any pesticides - compost relies on bugs and insects to help break down and decompose your materials. Good luck!

thanks ill have to try that! we have only been using cedar granules for mosquitos and it has worked somewhat.. i was worried that would kill worms.
