Tell me about MeiTai's and Ergo's

Ok, I'm sure I am not alone in this. Here is a rundown of what type of carriers I have...

Baby Bjorn: I never use it, but my husband really likes it.
Moby Wrap: I have all winter babies, so this has been great because you and the baby get so hot. love the security, not too fond of all the fabric. A little more high maintenance in putting on.
Over the Shoulder Baby Holder: its the wrong size, but I have still used regularly to nurse, napping baby, carrying in the store. not too fond of the one shoulder deal.
Ring Sling that a friend made: better in adjusting than over the shoulder, but she made it too long so there is a ton of fabric hanging down.
Slingling pouch sling: great! not as fun to wear under a coat because of the one shoulder deal and as baby got older, not as easy to carry.
Backpack: great for hiking, but my husband usually wears it the most.

SO... I am looking to buy something new (i am getting a little too exciting about the prospect of having a new sling). I have a baby due in December (this will be the 3rd baby I have in December). I was seriously considering an ErgoBaby Carrier, but I don't like that you can't have the baby facing front. Is there anything similar that the baby can also face outward too, with all the other features (like putting on back and hip?) Are the MeiTai/Ergo type carriers worth it? Are they comparable to the Moby and Bjorn enough to sell those and buy one of these? I want something similar to Bjorn so that my hubby will wear our baby. The Ergo is way out of our budget, but if its worth it, I will buy it (after selling others).

Ok, way too many questions. I may not even find the answers I am looking for, but I thought I should ask all of you before making any hasty purchases and doing the online research only gets you so far. I did not wear my second child as much as my first and I really want to get back into it.
Thank you so much!!!!

I personally LOVE my ergo. I used my moby style wrap for forward facing until I got the ergo, by then I found him too heavy to wear on my front anyway & really exclusively use my ergo for back carrying. In other words, not being able to forward face hasn't been an issue at all.

Just to answer the facing-forward portion of your post, we switched from a Bjorn to a Beco and I was a little worried about the not-being-able-to-face-forward aspect too, but it hasn't been an issue at all. For now, my 14mo DD is perfectly happy facing me, and she's still able to look out to the sides easily -- it's not like she's just staring at my chest the whole time or anything. And once she gets a little taller, she'll be able to see over my shoulder in a back carry, so that'll be kind of like forward facing.

Anyway, that was my experience going to a facing-inward-only baby carrier -- I absolutely love the Beco (which is very similar to an Ergo) -- the weight distribution down to the hips has been wonderful as she's grown heavier.

I also LOVE my ergo. Not facing out hasn't been an issue for us either. If I think baby woul really want to face out I usually put them in a sling sitting facing out, buddha style. Also, an older babe on your back in the ergo can see everything that way. I've never done the hip carry, so not sure on that one. IMO, an ergo or mei tai is more versatile than a bjorn or a moby. Only problem with the ergo is you can't really use with a newborn. They have an infant insert, but I never had much luck with it. MT's can be used w/ newborns, though.

Thanks for your responses! Anyone know if forward facing is an option in the Kozy Carrier or Babyhawk?

Looks like you can with this one...

We have an ergo sport (lighter weight fabric)
We face our baby out in the front all the time. I thought that you could do that? Anyway, its not been a problem, our baby is still really young but insists on seeing everything, so we just put him in budda style and kinda support his head a bit, but as he gets older we won't have to hold his head.

Well, you can, but your not supposed to. It was not designed to be used that way and the manufacturer says not to.

ETA: Oh, I see you said the Sport. I don't know about them, maybe they are different than the regular ones.

my hubby LOVES our ergo - I dont use it as much because I am so plump... and I get confuse by all structured carriers.... I love my wraps... but my hubby (who is thin) LOVES it! The front carry mentality is something you realize isn't worth worrying about after while.

Look into the Pikkolo if you'd like to do front facing, as the bottom of it cinches so that you can do front facing, yet baby is still position ergonomically. Its' about the same price as an Ergo. You can also do front facing with any mei tai, as shown in the link above. And you can also use ribbon to cinch the bottom of mei tais if you want to do front facing .

I LOVE my ergo as well. Both me and my BF use it. My baby loves it - forward facing hasn't been an issue.

We have a Babyhawk and an Ergo (well, and a Moby, and a gauze wrap, and a Maya sling, and a Hotsling, and a Bjorn ). For the first 2 months, both me and DD liked the Moby the best. It was indispensable for us in that newborn stage. We've haven't tried to forward face DD in anything but the ring sling. She loves that now, at 3 months, but ack it hurts my shoulder!

If your husband likes the Bjorn, I'm guessing he'll like the Ergo. My husband LOVES it because it distributes her weight well (he has a bad back) and it looks WAY more manly than my fuchsia Moby, my carnation pink Maya sling, and my pink and orange Babyhawk

I second the Pikkolo. I LOVE mine. It's so comfortable.
