How Do You Go Coverless?

So, my 3 week old has a lovely rash from the sposies he was in for the first 2 weeks after he was born... I have had him in cloth for almost a week now and it is getting better but is still there. I have been changing him every hour or as soon as I hear him poop, and I have been trying to leave him coverless. But I have so far only done it during naptime, because I can lay him down on a blanket so I don't get damp when he pees. What does everyone else do for coverless time? I would like to leave the baby and my toddler (15 months) coverless more but I haven't quite figured out the logistics...

When DS was little I would put him in fleece pants with his prefold.

I can't really do the fleece pants here... it has been over 100 everyday for the past month Good idea for the winter tho, I hadn't even thought of it!

I just let my 16-mo go coverless. That's it. When he gets wet I change him. If I do put a cover on him he's more than likely just going to take it off anyway. Fitteds with snaps or prefolds with pins work best for us without a cover, because aplix just begs to be undone.

When ds was little I would just lay him on top of a couple of prefolds & let him naked a lot of the time. Once he started sitting & moving I just pin a prefold in place & check regularly - he gets changed much more frequently without a cover!

I guess I should figure out pinning... I have only mastered the PFs with the snappis and I am thinking that letting the toddler go coverless in a snappi is a bad idea?

yes, a toddler coverless with a snappi'ed diaper is a bad idea. they are extremely sharp. a cover always should be used with a snappi'ed diaper. i would invest in some wool or fleece or learn how to pin if I were you. on the newborn, they are easy to just lay on a prefold naked or laid on a wool or fleece blanket in a coverless prefold. that should keep your floor dry. when my youngest was a tiny one, we wrapped her in a fleece blanket in a long-sleeve shirt and hat and a pinned prefold coverless and that worked really well.

I have fleece for the older one, so I can just put those over for him... right? As long as the snappi is covered it is fine, right? While the little one isn't mobile or anything can I put him in just a snappi-ed PF? I am scared of pinning...

I do let my ds go coverless with a snappi'ed pf, but he's 29 months and doesn't bother with it. You'd have to judge the safety factor for yourself based on your kid. Also beware of it snagging on your clothes or the carpet!

When baby is little, obviously you don't have to worry about him taking it off, but you do have to worry about it snagging. When I can, I used fitteds, though, as they are my preference in general.

I always gave my son tummy time and airing out time at the same time, you know - kill two birds with one stone. I'm a physical therapist, but still learned the hard way with my older son that we didn't do enough tummy time with him. (flat head, slow crawling, etc). Anyhow, I'd lay him on his tummy with a waterproof pad or towel with a diaper underneath, and left him naked. I'll do that lots with this babe, too! Just another thought.

Anyway, when I'm holding my babe, you might get a little damp if they don't have a cover on, but you don't usually get totally soaked. You usually know right away when they are wet and can change them right away.

I will try and do tummy time with him naked That way he can't spray pee everywhere!! I am not a huge fitted fan... they always take forever to dry (which drives me crazy) and I seem to have a hard time getting them clean, I love how easy the PFs are to clean plus we don't have a ton of money for diapers and with 2 in diapers PFs let me have enough to not go nuts about running out!!

I always wondered about going coverless too. My hangup was wet spots on the floor, seat, lap, etc. I tried it when my DD was over a year and I was amazed at how as soon as she peed, she came waddling up to me bow legged, begging to be changed. She didn't like the fact that she could feel the wet diaper on her legs. Put a cover on and she'd be fine in a wet diaper for hours.

I didn't do cover less once they got mobile. Before that they would happily sit/lay on the changing mat on the floor.

When they were really little I just lay them on the nappy (in DSs case I tucked it round him to avoid a fountain.

Once they were a bit bigger we had a couple of tie on nappies which I used to fasten quite loosely.
