Basic Food (aka food stamps) in WA state?

Has anyone applied for Basic Food in WA state? Our income is low enough now that I think we'd qualify, but I don't want to go through an invasive interview or anything like that. Also, they mention a work requirement on the web site, but have few details.

any tips, please!

We were on FS in WA. The application process is really not that bad, and we got alot of money on our card. I'm not sure what the "work requirement" is, but we got FS when DH was on unemployment, and they continued for the first 3 months or so he was working.

I just got them, my DH was unemployed, although he just went back to work yesterday. The appt was very easy, you need a months worth of paystubs(or proof of unemployment in Dh's case). You also need to show your housing costs-house, utilities. They just tallied up our monthly totals and deducted part of our housing costs. Our card ended up with $137 for a family of 3. I currently am pg, so in Oct after our baby is born I need to reapply to get more benefits. I also have to call now that Dh is working, so I can send them a copy of Dh's paystub-we may make too much then and the lady who did my interview didn't want us to have to pay money back.

My nephew and his wife got the maximum allotment for their size family(3) last fall. My nephew was laid off and his wife had just had a baby, so she wasn't working. They got about $500 if I remember correctly, so obviously they had little to no income and weren't working. Not sure how that worked, but it did.

It starting to sound to me like WA is pretty easy to get FS, I had my interview and had my card within 10 minutes and it was charged and working the next day. Not sure if that could be because I already am in the system due to my pregnancy medical and DD's MCHIP. I used my card 2 days after I had my appt.

It may be because I have such little ones but there is no work requirement for my family and the application process was very easy. The interview was painless and relatively short. Good luck.

I was poking around trying to find info on food stamps last week, and found an online calculator. Apparently my family has too much in savings (i.e. basically a 3-6mo emergency fund) and in hubby's 401k (i.e. there's money in there) and totally paid off cars to even come close to qualifying, even with no income coming near our checking account. So if you can do some more poking around online or getting ahold of your local office (whichever agency it is, I think it varies by state, but don't quote me), that may be good.

WA state is one of the few that has waived the asset requirement. So they say you can have some assets (a home, cars, maybe bank account).

My kids are older, 6 and 9, but if I work I would have to pay for care for them.

I guess I'll go into an office and see. They can always say no, right?

thanks for the feedback!

I live in WA state and DH was laid off last year. Although our income met criteria for FS, they valued DH's car at $2000.00 (an '80 Datsun that doesn't actually run) so we did not qualify.

I hadn't heard they waive the assets thing. How do you get them to do that?

That's ridiculous-I would have fought that, that sounds more to me like a piece of junk you'd have to pay to get rid of than an asset. A 30 year old car that doesn't run as a $2,000 asset give me a break. Dh has a 89 van, but we put the value as 1,000 and that's where they kept it. YK though they just changed things big time in our state, the income levels have risen a lot and the resource values for certain programs has dropped.

I think it's a temporary thing. They're asking for the info on bank accounts, etc., but not looking at those numbers. As the lady said to me today, "you can have 15 Escalades in your backyard and still get approved for Basic Food".

I did go in today and ask, but I totally spaced asking about the work thing. I'll have to call.
