Rice Cooking

Being the mother of an infant (again) I have mastered the art (hopefully) of turning off the stove when the baby changes my plans. Today I was cooking rice 3/4 brown, 1/4 white (because I ran out of brown) and had to turn it off before it came up to a boil. I had browned the rice first with butter, and then went back and added the water, and shortly thereafter the baby demanded my attention, so I had to turn it off. I went back and checked when I thought I had time to start cooking it again, and it was almost done!

So, you mamas who are cooking whizzes, how long would it take for this to happen intentionally?

Not a cooking whiz...but the rice probably just steamed itself. when i cook rice, i let it boil until there are small "craters" forming, and then i turn the heat to very low (as low as it will go) and cover and let sit for 10 - 15 min.
