Will mechanics (we'd take ours to the dealership here in town that has a in house mechanics shop) bill for car repairs? Large scale ones? Or is that a cash up front only thing?

Depends on the mechanic, how well you know them, how long you've been using them, etc.

Most big shops will expect money up front, but if you have an independent mechanic who has his own shop, and have been using him for years, he might be willing to work something out for you.

I've never had to pay upfront and I don't think that I would. I don't know why they would want you to pay upfront as they have your vehicle and could hold that "hostage".

I think the OP means pay in full when the repairs are complete vs. getting billed and being to pay over time.

OP - I've never tried that. I have no idea if it is possible. I've always paid on delivery, so to speak.

Yeah that's what I meant. I'm going to call tomorrow morning and see if they won't do that (a billing option as opposed to paying at time of pickup type thing).

Ours doesn't and I don't know any that do. There are times that this is what a credit card is for

: Its been my experience that they expect the cash when the work is done, we have had several large repairs and had to pay upfront or else they won't release your car.

Though maybe if its a place where you know the mechanics well they might be willing to work with you.

Nope, no go. They changed their policy last month to pay upon pickup. Just my flickin' luck.
