While reading this thread, I thought SNAP was an acronym for some military food stamp program. I hadn't heard anything other than food stamps before this thread. But after reading those links, it seems SNAP stands for supplemental nutrition assistance program. But since in a few places, it's referred to as SNAP/Food Stamp Program, I'm even more confused. That suggests, at least to me, that there are two programs, one called SNAP, one simply called food stamps, and in the one link, they are both being referred to when they write SNAP/Food Stamp Program. Or perhaps the / dividing them means person a calls it this/ person b calls it this and it's actually the same thing. Well, now I'm even more confused.

Is this one program going to two different names, or two separate programs following the same rules?

It is the same program the name has been recently changed to snap, but each state can name it what ever they want according to what I've read. it does make it more confusing. just reading some of these links has me :

The 2008 farm bill (H.R. 2419, the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008) was enacted May 22, 2008 through an override of the President’s veto. The new law increased the commitment to Federal food assistance programs by more than $10 billion over the next 10 years. In efforts to fight stigma, the law changed the name of the Federal program to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP as of Oct. 1, 2008, and changed the name of the Food Stamp Act of 1977 to the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008. States maintained flexibility to name the program on their own but were encouraged to change the name to SNAP or another alternate name. In fact, more than ten States had already changed the names of their programs by this time.
