I haven't read through all the responses in detail, but did pick up on the water issue.

Have you tried using a rain barrel at all to collect rainwater. I know you said it hasn't rained much there this year (we're facing the same issue here in WI) so this might be a solution for your garden *next* year.

I have a friend who got a used food container - it's a very large plastic barrel - and he attached a hose to it and then attached pvc pipe he drilled holes into. It's a really cool drip irrigation system now. The gutter from his barn roof drops all the rainwater into the barrel and then it slowly gets distributed to his garden plants.

Man! Gardening in Hard Times is probably one of the most verbose, complex "making it harder than it is" gardening books of all time. Jezo chriminy! I've had great gardens without all that insanity.

Anyway, I ripped out EVERYTHING that was making me mad. It was SO liberating & a great outlet for my fustration. What's left (which is little... quality over quantity, right?) has rebounded beautifully. I think it all appreciated the ellimination of all ragged "competition."

I have screens up now hoping it prevents any further toddler/chicken episodes.

Now for fall. After mourning the loss of my summer crops I'm totally behind on that already... heh... probably setting myself up for failure, but I've got to keep going. "If you don't succeed try try again" and all that.

Mine is also looking bad. . .except the tomato's. I'm pulling a bunch of stuff up and starting a later fall crop. Anyone else going to try a new batch of colder weather things?
