you said there was a place where it was against the law to wash your car in the street. no, washing your car in the street is not disrespecting yourself, but breaking the law over the issue would be. Unless you think it's worth getting arrested over, but that seems impractical to me. So, as I said, for me, everything falls under those 3 rules. If for you you want to add following the laws no matter what that is OKAY that is what you feel is best for your family. My family has different values. Not better, not worse, just different

Listen with an open heart and an open mind.

We talk a lot about intentions and the difference between getting hit by your brother (Or anyone else) and your brother accidentally hitting you.

While it doesn't fall into any of the respect clauses, at least not the obvious ones to a child trying to make some pocket money, it does become important to stress following local customs and laws because of the fact that we're not citizens. There's no way to change it, no good reason to defy it.
respect your environment... the soapy run off is bad for our water.

good point. In fact the example could probably even be true about respecting others too, especially if it's a law that was voted on in the area, meaning most people are bothered by it for whatever reason. If there was more of a sense of community and respect, a lot of these laws wouldn't be "necessary" though there are some laws that I feel (as far as america is concerned) violate our constitutional rights... but that's another post entirely lol.

Anyway, yeah nothing wrong with raising children to respect the law if that is in line with your family values. In our family we have a focus on knowing the law and more importantly knowing our rights as citizens (of whatever country we live in).Because of our personal family values and beliefs, to simply require the law be obeyed would oversimplify and go against our beliefs, which is why we have the the three base rules of respect, which govern us in more ways then the government in some areas, and less in other areas. We are good, moral people though. It's not like we just say "who cares about the law" we do care, we learn about it, we also learn our rights, and we also have our 3 rules which keeps us doing the right things if we follow them.
