doubler options with prefolds

Thread Starter
DD is now taking long naps (hooray!) and sometimes sleeping nine hours through the night (double hooray!). She's soaked through her prefolds several times, so we've taken to doubling them up, but it's so bulky and makes the covers not fit well. I want to use doublers, but I'm unemployed right now, so the hemp and bamboo ones are rather expensive for us at the moment. Can I get microfiber inserts and place them in the cover, and then the prefold on top, so it's just the prefold touching her skin? Any other options for inexpensive doublers to use with prefolds and covers?

Thanks!

I'd love to hear as well . . . .

You could get some cheap flats and fold them up and place down the middle, but I don't know if that would be more or less bulky! You could cut up some prefolds if you have enough, to make smaller doublers out of them. Hey, a washcloth works in a pinch!

Sorry I don't know the answer to your specific question! Good luck!

These are awesome. Are they too expensive? We bought 12 and *love* them. They are super trim (you could use two and it would still be trimmer than a PF), soak up a lot of pee, dry fast and the fleece helps them feel drier while napping/sleeping. Can't say enough good things about them!

I would think MF would be fine as long as there is something between the baby's skin and the insert. Even just a liner of some sort.

We use a strip of fleece as a liner inside our prefolds with a microfiber towel trifolded on the outside of the prefold--super cheap in any auto section and then for extra extra absorbency a folded cotton terry washcloth--seriously those suckers really soak it up--and are REALLY CHEAP.

Trimmer than 2 prefolds but not the trimmest--it gets the job done.

When I needed something quickly to get my youngest through naptime I grabbed 2 regular washcloths and layed them between the prefold and cover. Worked great!

My favorite liners are the now discontinued, but still available at some stores, Thirsties Microterry Inserts ($3.50). These inserts are very absorbant, super durable, and quite trim. We like to add two of them to DD's nighttime diaper. I have also used Play All Day Organic Hemp Contour Inserts ($6.50) and bumGenius Stay Dry Doubler (3 or $10). I have always placed the insert in between the prefold and cover. HTH!

I have purchased all of the above from my local cloth diapering shop...

when you say fleece, do you mean polarfleece like jackets are made from?

BumGenius stay-dry doublers have microfiber on the bottom to hold the pee and smooth, stay-dry fleece on top to keep baby comfortable. They are cheap, too - roughly 3 for $10.

We also used Baby Bunz's awesome Hemp/Cotton Doublers and found them not bulky at all, very absorbent, and their Hemp/Cotton material is organic now too! :)

We only used the ones with the attached Poly Fleece liner for night time, as it wicks moisture away from the skin even better than regular hemp/cotton fleece.

For some reason Isaac's Ma's link above wasn't working, so here are links that should go to the right pages:
