Could this be celiac?

Hi, everyone,

Help me out if you can. I am starting to suspect celiac with our 7 year old. She has a family history of IgG mediated food sensitivities. Her father to eggs (and some other stuff), her paternal aunt to dairy, and her paternal grandmother to wheat.

We had her tested for straight IgE, and she came up ever so slightly for egg, and a tiny little blip for dairy, that didn't even register as a phase 1 allergy, just a blip.

So, we moved on to the IgG panel. HIGHLY reactive to egg, whey, milk and whole wheat. And moderately reactive to some other things, including gluten, rye, spelt, runner peanuts, lettuce, cucumber, lettuce, kidney beans...

We removed dairy and egg immediately and saw a huge improvement in her behavior. We were in denial about the wheat. Now that we're back in the U.S., we're working on eliminating the wheat.

Now, she seems to have chronic loose bowel movements, and we're still having some serious behavior flare ups that we thought would go away when we eliminated the offending foods.

All this has me thinking that we might be dealing with celiac?? Plus I saw on another thread where p1gg1e posted that celiac kids can show up as having a milk protein allergy that might go away once gluten free??

Another thing that had me wondering was when she was 4, she had a weird episode when she stopped eating. She said she "couldn't swallow the spit". This went on for two or three weeks, and she was down to eating only drinkable yogurt and mayonnaise packets. We tried parasite medication, and finally they put her on zantac (which turned into it's own nightmare, but that's a different story). Eventually she resumed eating, but we never did determine exactly what that was all about.

Does it sound like celiac could be in play here? Or do I just need to work harder to eliminate even the moderately reactive foods too?

Any advice would be MUCH appreciated!!!

Or, could all this just be due to a high intolerance to whole wheat and a moderate intolerance to gluten? (which we know she has)

Well, since the test said highly reactive to wheat and moderately to gluten, it's possible she's just IgG (which is plenty serious in and of itself). Celiac is a possibility, but some people are simply gluten intolerant. Either way, removing all wheat and all gluten is the way to go.

Thanks, Chinese Pistache!

I guess you´re right, it really doesn't matter, does it. If she's highly reactive to wheat and moderate for gluten, we need it out anyway! We were just in denial about the wheat because her panel said "whole wheat", so we just kept away from whole grain wheat products and didn't worry so much about white flour products, just tried to reduce them to keep the gluten reaction to a minimum.

thanks ... we're just having some ugly behavior issues and I want them to be food related so we can get rid of the ugly behavior by just getting rid of the offending food. If that's not it, then I have to figure out what the heck to do about this ugly behavior :

Have you done a food journal or a rotation diet? We eliminated a bunch of foods for DS then rotated some foods, and some of them became obvious. For instance, egg made him cry all the next day (he was 8yo, so not normal behavior). One of the things (or maybe many of the things) we eliminated got rid of his "neediness" at bedtime (would lay awake for a couple hours and would want multiple tuck-ins and hugs). Soy gives him 10 days of tantrums. So it can be any food. I did the ALCAT test for DS and DD2 (I had also done an elimination diet for DD2 2 years prior to the ALCAT but I was scared to add anything back in; when she had the ALCAT test, she got to add a bunch back in but lost some of the ones she had).
