easy newbie crochet yarn recommendations

As mentioned in my other post, I'm using cheap acrylic yarn while I learn, but once I'm convinced I can make a passable pair of wool longies, which yarn should I get? Can I expect to find something locally, or will online be better? Here are my criteria:

Easy to work with for someone new to crochet.
I would love to have something supersoft for my newborn, if I can afford it.
Obviously, something that makes a good, absorbant cover for a newborn.
Cheap would be nice, but I might be willing to splurge if it was worth it.

I'm planning to use this pattern unless one of you talks me out of it:
http://withatangledskein.blogspot.co...het-pants.html

It says:
This pattern is worked with worsted weight wool yarn
Hook size G, Gauge 4 stitches per inch, 4 rows per inch in sc, or whatever hook you need to maintain gauge.

I'd start with Patton's. You should be able to find it at just about any craft store (Joann's, Michael's, Beverly's). It's pretty cheap, especially if you luck out and catch a sale. Once you've done a few in Patton's, you can move on to more expensive yarn if you like, but I personally really like the feel of Patton's, and the price can't be beat.
