Took dd to the fabric store today and she picked up some precut quilt squares and asked me to make her a "twilt" after determining that she was asking for a quilt, I could not possibly turn her down. So I purchased the squares she wanted (not what I would have expected her to pick out but hey it's not going to be my blanket) and now I am trying to figure out what to do. She likes the squares just as they are and does not want me to cut them (YES!) so my plan is to sew them together in the order she likes and then either just sew it to a piece of muslin or sew it to batting and muslin or other fabric to be determined. Once I do this how do I "quilt it" Can I just run stiches along the seams of the squares? Should I pick a simple stitch pattern and try to quilt it? (admitting I am not even sure what that would mean) I have heard of tying could I tie the centers where corners meet? How do you actually do the tying? I was also thinking I needed to sew a border around it. Is a border necessary? I realize these are probably silly questions but I have only sewn one other thing and just recently so not really sure what I am doing.
This is the fabric, as you can see I am short 2 pieces so I need to pick them up tomorrow. Will this look okay sewn as big pieces or should I cut them smaller? They were all supposed to be 18X22 but vary in size any where from 17x21 to 18.75x22.5 So not sure how to divide them. But since she wants them sewn together in big pieces I should probably just do it that way.
