What do I do with the poop?? :(

I am TRYING so hard to be a cloth diaper lover, mainly because I find it is easier to EC in cloth, and of course for all the other benefits for environment and baby!

BUT...

I just cant figure out HOW to clean the poop! DS is going to be 10 mos. and has sticky, solid, messy poops! Swishing it around in a bucket does nothing to remove the poop, I have to scrub which is way too much work. Please tell me there is an easier way!! WDYD?

designate a scraper for poop duty. keep it by the toilet, and scrape the poop off into the toilet, then swish. An old blunt knife or spoon would work.

when ds1 was still in diapers, he had atomic sticky poo, and that was the only way to get it off.

also, there are flushable liners for cloth diapers, imse vimse has them and so does diaperaps. . .they come on a roll. you lay them between the diaper and the baby.

here's links. . .

Hope that helps!

you could also look into diaper sprayers, if they're high enough velocity it should completely cut out the need to scrub. you can purchase them (bumgenious makes one), or here's a tutorial i found.

My washer has a cycle called "Rinse and Spin." Sometimes, when it's just squishy stuff, I throw it in on that cycle. Then I would do the diaper wash as usual.

Flushable liners have changed my life !!

I cannot believe I waited until DD was 17 mo. old to try them. They make cleaning the diapers so much easier. DD now tells the poop "bye-bye" and waves as we flush the toilet.

I also used the flushable liners. There are several types. When they were wet I just washed them with the diapers and when they were "muddy" they got flushed.

lots of people use diaper sprayers, but we've never really needed it.

We often use flushable or fleece liners. For flushable, I've tried imse vimse and bummis and both are good for different reasons. The IV are a little stiffer, but you can wash and re-use if they only get peed on. The bummis are softer, but don't make the mistake of washing them with your dipes if you have anything velcro! They just shred and end up like cotton balls in your velcro. Not nice.

We use fleece liners, too, and the poo really just flakes off them, so it doesn't take much swishing. Then you can reuse them until they are totally yucky and get new ones. You can buy them or just cut up fleece from joann's or whatever.

I have a designated poo spatula/flipper in a tub of vinegar that I keep locked up under my sink. Scrape into toilet, use toilet paper if necessary to scrape visible poo off of spatula, then back into the vinegar until the next use. The poopy diapers go into the diaper pail and then get washed with the whole diaper load, but if there are slimy poop diapers in there I do an extra cold/cold wash/rinse first before doing my regular diaper routine. It works well, costs next to nothing, does not require submerging my hands in poop in the toilet (gag) and thankfully dd's poop didn't stay at this stage for very long, it quickly firmed up enough to sort of peel it off the diaper leaving nary a skid mark.

Flushable liners and/or a diaper sprayer. I love my diaper sprayer, and can't imagine CDing without it!

Here's my journey to date:

bf poop- tossed it in the wash, rinse cyle, regular wash

Beging solids- shook off what came off in the toilet and tossed in wash

Mostly solids- Luckily I have a tub that is right next to the toilet. I bought a $20 showerhead combo kit that comes with a regular head and hand held sprayer. If I hadn't done that I would have bought a sprayer.

I'm cheap (or is it frugal?), so at a junk store I bought an old rusty strainer and an old pair of chicken tongs. I found an old paint scraper in the garage. I hold the nasty diaper with the chicken tongs in my left hand and use the paint scraper in my right hand to get the poo off. I then dunk to the get the last remaining yucky stuff off and then give it a good squish in the strainer to get the extra water out. I never have to touch anything with my bare hands. And it only cost twenty cents. The fresher the poo, the easier it is to get off.

I don't use liners or a sprayer! I just remove the "squishy" poop with a little bit of toilet paper. I remove "regular" poop by letting it fall off the diaper. After the poop is removed and flushed, I spritz the soiled dipe (and wipe) with some Bac-Out. Then, I toss it all in a dry pail.

when my oldest was in diapers, i jsut shook what i could into the toilet and threw the diaper in the pail. it was fine except for a few poo flinging incidences. this time i plan on getting a deisngated "poo spatula", which i will just wipe off with a wet cloth wipe when done scraping. then ill toss the wipe and diaper in the pail.
