OK, here's a new one. In the past I've always been like "I'm not comfortable with you handling the penis" at the well baby visits for my two boys. Well, my pediatrician remembered that...
But in a new twist, this time she asked ME to retract it. I was kind of like--huh? (which I did not obviously) I also told her that all of the medical information I had on the intact penis said NOT to retract at all.
Then she asked me..."doesn't it ever get a little red?"
And, I told her, well if he has diaper rash I just slather cream all over him, etc. And I told her that 'remember you prescribed my nystatin 5 months ago just in case?'
All I can say is somehow this Dr. sounds a little bit confused on how to exactly examine the penis or something. Sometimes she says nothing to me at all, just looks, other times she'll ask me to lift it up, now this is a new one.
I had to stop her from retracting once (before it happened, but she was like pulling back enough so that it looked 'tight' but hadn't retracted yet) and ever since then I've maintained my mantra..."not comfortable with other people handling the penis".
And, all of this is confusing to me because she's supposedly pro-intact (says her DS is intact) though she performs circumcisions in the office. I know she didn't always do it (because I met someone here on MDC who goes to the same ped and told me that she regretably had it done to her first DC and our ped gave her a referral for it). I know she does them now because I had the misfortune of being in the room next to one, and the office staffer told me the baby was crying so much because it was getting it done. And I told her I was surprised that she does them at all. Which the staffer scoffed at (she was a new hire and I'll bet her toddler was done) and said. "I think it's a good thing". After that I fell into my typical penis infomation mode, etc.
Does anyone have any idea what information I can give her? And, I know it's fine and dandy when I'm there to supervise...but what if one time DH takes one of the boys? KWIM? I think I'll need something specifically for peds.
So this is part vent, part hoping for direct info and part hoping someone will commiserate on the experience.
