One Way to Optimize your Business Site for Search Engines - Social Bookmarking

Thread Starter
I am working on SEO this AM ~ some things to do to increase Google rankings include using Stumble Upon, Digg, Proppeller and the Google Bookmarks. I'll do you if you'll do me.

The two main benefits to us are 1)traffic and 2)back-links. Every submission you make to a social bookmarking site counts as a back-link to search engines. So if you submit to 10 different sites, that's 10 quality links to your website that Google and other engines see. (There's debate on whether you can have "too much of a good thing". Stick to 10-20 and not hundreds) Back-links are king at increasing your page rank on searches. The other benefit is traffic. Having lots of traffic to your site increases that chance that someone will see it and like it enough to bookmark it, link to it and tell their friends about it.

So what we can do for each other is to tell these various social bookmarking sites, "Hey we like this site". I'll link and explain the most popular; Digg, Stumble-Upon, Propeller, Delicious and Google Bookmarks.

Digg and Propeller
work on the same premise of news stories. You submit your site as a "new news article" and the more people who Digg or Prop it, the higher it ranks in those sites, and the more it will come up on google searches. Accounts are free and easy to create. Once you've done so to submit an article follow these links; Digg / Propeller.

Stumble-Upon is great for random traffic. (And internet boredom!) You fill in information when you register about your interests, download a toolbar, then click a "stumble" button and you'll be randomly taken to a website that is "interesting" to you. If you like it, give it a thumbs up. If not, thumbs down. The first person to thumbs up a page "discovers" it and adds in a review and tags. The more thumbs up a page has, the more likely someone will stumble over it when pressing their button. Great great great traffic from this. To submit your webpage to Stumble-upon click the thumbs up button on the toolbar while on your homepage.

Delicious is a place for your web bookmarks. Pretty simple. Register and bookmark your site. It will also let you import your existing bookmarks and share them.

Google Bookmarks
because well, Google has to have a hand in everything. You download a toolbar, and when you're on a site you like you click the star to bookmark it. Google search takes into account how many people have starred a website in its rankings.

You should be the first to submit your website to these places so you have control over the title, tags and content.

So, in conclusion I'd love it if you digged, stumbled, propped, and bookmarked my site with Google and Delicous! Post your website here as well and we can all do the same for you.

Random thought...I wonder if coupon code websites (the more popular ones) count as high quality links?

what you're describing isn't search engine optimization, it's social networking.

high quality links are defined by the page rank of the site that's doing the linking. The page rank is determined by incoming links, original content, link relevancy, traffic... Google explains how page rank is determined in several pages, i could condense it or you could learn more here http://www.google.com/corporate/tech.html

Search Engine Optimization means making your site easy for search engines to navigate, and easy for them to determine what your article is about.

Your keywords, titles, subheadings, descriptions, categories and tags give the search engines the information they need to determine where to place your content in search results. Successful SEO results in articles that rank high in search results for their keywords (or keyword phrases)

Social networking is sharing your article with as many people as you can, a good social networking campaign can drive traffic to your article from other users of the network. Articles that rank higher in Digg and Stumbleupon categories do earn some google juice, but only if they're also optimized for their keyword terms.

SEO directs users not only from the Digg & Stumbleupon sites, but from EVERY google, msn, yahoo, bing and every other search engine that operates on a text-based algorithm.

There is a difference between social networking and SEO, Social networking is like a cherry in the SEO pie.
