This season we are experiencing an unusually bad case of late blight on potato and tomato crops. This means that conventional farmers are using extra sprays on these crops (fungicides). Even some organic farmers are using federally approved organic sprays to try to prevent it or slow its spread on their crops. However, you may want to look into these sprays before you buy and eat tomatoes this summer and potatoes later, and if you buy from a local farm you may want to ask if and what they are spraying.
By the way, I used to think (without really thinking) that potatoes were not too affected by sprays - they are underground, right? But actually they get soaked in spray even more than many foods, all the spray drips down into the ground, soaking the soil and the potato, and there's no opportunity for rain to wash it away.
