Strep throat? WWYD?

Has anyone cured possible strep throat without antibiotics? Like maybe with garlic?

It is very possible that my husband has strep throat. He has had a sore throat for a week now while we were out of town. He still has it. No cold like symptoms, except a little coughing earlier on. He has a couple of white spots that we can see.

Of course its the weekend...so he would have to go to an after hours clinic to see anyone = more money. He doesn't want to be seen anyway. Says that according to online it will heal in 7-10 days anyway. That antibiotics just shorten the duration of time you are contagious, but does not shorten the duration of the illness. So he figures since its been at least a week anyway, that it should be almost over. However, yesterday he only had 1 white spot. Today he has 2.

What would you do? Go to an after hours clinic this weekend? Wait until Monday to see the Dr? Just try natural remedies, like garlic? (He is totally willing to do the garlic thing...and is about to.)

BTW, I read you can be contagious for 2-3 weeks even after your symptoms are gone. We've all spent the past 2 weeks in a hotel room together - close quarters. We are home now and the kids and I leave again on Wednesday for almost 2 weeks. (He is staying home.)

Thoughts?`

My kids may have had strep last year, we went to our CST doc for a regular visit and I mentioned the kids had a minor cold, and she offered a strep test after she looked at their throats. It seems like one of those illnesses that can pass completely under the radar, be somewhat annoying, or get fairly bad. For those, my routine is to do a lot of supportive stuff so that our bodies heal on their own. For us--bowel tolerance vitamin C, garlic is good, I made Aviva Romm's garlic lemonade (lemon juice, garlic, water, honey, google for recipe), which is really tasty, especially warm, and I may try something like Master Tonic, which is really strong in flavor, I hear, but should help with topical stuff as it goes down.

I would make a batch of garlic oil to massage into his neck, feet (lots on the feet before bed then cover with socks), and chest. Then I would have him take some honey and cider vinegar. You can make a "tea" with hot water, cider vinegar, honey and lemon (all to taste just don't expect cider vinegar to taste great). Also, gargling with salt water. If he is tough then just eat the clove of garlic, honey will make it taste better. Taking honey straight will help with coughing. You can heat it in a pan with some onion as well for coughs.

To make garlic oil all you have to do is peal, cut and crush up the garlic clove and put it in some oil, I like to use olive oil but any will do. You can warm it on the stove a little bit. Not much at all. Don't heat it just warm it, if you can't put your finger on the bottom of the pan comfortably then it is too warm, you will kill all the good stuff in the garlic.

Hope that helps.

I cured my strep throat with Grapefruit Seed Extract. I had tons of white spots and was really sick/feverish, etc. I don't do doctors or abx, so I did some research online. I used 15 drops in water and followed the recommendation to gargle it for as long as possible then swallow. The pain was gone by the next morning! I did this for 5 days (3X a day), then continued with 5 drops in orange juice (3X a day) for another 7 just to prevent it from coming back. It worked great!

If he really thinks it might be strep throat, I'd get a throat culture and, if it's positive, antibiotics. I'm definitely not a big antibiotic pusher, but strep throat isn't something to mess around with. The complications can be serious, including heart damage.

He went to the Dr today. Not strep. So probably viral. I made him go this weekend instead of waiting though - I needed some peace of mind - I was worried about our kiddos!

I'm glad he's okay!

Strep untreated

Strep is really not something to mess around with. I agree that not all illnesses require medical intervention and we as a society are highly overmedicated, but this illness does not apply. I personally have 3 family members who have had serious, life-long complications. One cousin developed Kawaski disease from it going untreated, one now has Pandas OCD and another has serious kindey damage and she will never have properly working kidneys again. It can and does attack other organs/areas of the body if left untreated. It's worth at least letting a doctor look at.
