Twins?

Anyone having twins out there?

I had my first checkup with my midwife this past week. Told her about my extreme symptoms...She said maybe twins. That in her experience 9/10 times she was right. Have an ultrasound to confirm one way or the other this week.

Twins...wow!

We think I may have twins. I don't have an ultrasound until mid August at the earliest though. I'm already showing a hint of a belly (at 5 weeks!!! and no it's not pm bloat) and my betas were on the higher side. We'll have to see.....

Wow! I can't wait to hear if she was right!

DH keeps saying it's twins because I can't stop eating and at this stage with my other two I had aversions to just about everything, but I'm pretty confident it's just a different pregnancy, different symptoms. I have my first appointment a week from Monday, not sure if I'll be having a dating ultrasound or not.

DH says the same thing about me! With my first two, I was puking my guts out by now. But with this one I am ravenously hungry all the time! My first appt is the 25th, but I won't have a u/s till closer to 20 weeks.

If it *is* twins, I need to start praying now that DH will be able to be talked into still having a homebirth.

Same here! I'm really not thinking it is, but there's that small part of me that keeps thinking ahead to the birth--if it WAS twins, I'm not even sure what I'd do, standalone birth centers in Florida won't do twin births, and 'on record' twin homebirth isn't legal here either--I'd have to do some major searching to try and find a midwife willing to attend a twin homebirth around here.

Twins (both fraternal and identical) run in my family. I know my husband wouldn't be comfy UC-ing twins, but technically midwives aren't allowed to home birth them here and unless there was a very very good reason I wouldn't be comfortable going to a hospital. The midwife I had as a first choice probably would, especially if I was willing to get an ultrasound to check on placentas and such, but she's off in March, so I'd have to give birth early. Gloria Lemay is about 3 hours away though, so I think worse came to worse I would call her up and arrange something with her. I likely would get an ultrasound if we suspected twins too, since we've had a few TTTS twins in my family.

Obviously it's all conjecture at the moment, but it's kind of exciting to think about.

Oh my goodness...I just realised...if it IS twins, we'll have to get a minivan! We only have room in the Rav-4 for 1 more carseat!!!

how exciting ladies! before my BFP I was being tormented by twins it felt, lots of dreams about them and then every time I was out, seeing them everywhere (the population here is fairly small, so it felt odd to be seeing so many sets of twins). And then at one of my shows, there were 3 sets of twins that showed up at my booth. I was panicking that the next pregnancy would be twins because of all that.

I'm gonna just pretend that was all in my head and not spend too much time thinking on it. Perhaps it was just my body's way of telling me I was pregnant in general. But if it is twins, they'll be born at home too.

I won't know for some time if I am having twins, since I don't do ultrasounds, but here is my situation:

About 3 weeks before I conceived, my just-turned 3 year old dd came up to me in the kitchen and put her hand on my belly. She said, "Mama, am I going to have another baby brother and baby sister?" I said, "I don't know, honey, who told you that?" She didn't have an answer for me as to who told her. This was the first time she has said anything about a baby in reference to my belly (I have a lot of friends who have had and are having babies, so she is very familiar with the idea, plus she witnessed her baby brother's birth). A week or so later I had AF, and then didn't think anything else about it. Then I became pregnant (which was a complete shock to us this time), and now every time anyone asks my dd if she thinks I am having a baby brother or sister for her, she says that there is both in there. She even counted on her fingers the other day, "Baby brother, baby sister, Hudson, me, mommy, daddy." I don't even know how she would have the idea that there even can be more than one baby, because she has only known that women have either a boy or girl, yk?

If she is right, then I think God just let her know ahead of time so she could be prepared .

Wait, is that a sign? My BFP came up dark within a few seconds.

I think it depends on how many days post ovulations you are. I tested the day AF was due and it was practically sucking the dye out of the control line. I am failry certain of my dates. I suppose I should ask for a blood draw and maybe a US tomorrow but I REALLY want to UP/UC so I think it is almost better being a surprise

I am 4 months with twins. This is my first pregnancy, so I can't compare my symptoms to previous pregnancies. I am ravenous most of the time. I have been gaining weight fast, so I was suspicious. My first ultrasound at 10 weeks confirmed it. I continue to be ravenous (being ravenous and nauseous at the same time is weird ... and its 24-7!).

I am in Maryland and spending alot of time investigating my birth options. It seems to be the case that the only legal way to deliver twins here is in a hospital OR on an operating table, plugged into IVs and monitors, unable to get up and move around. I would be allowed to try for vaginal for a few hours (still on the OR table) if both are vertex. It seems that c-sections are just the way of things for twins. My other option is home with CPM (not legal here).

I'm leaning for the home option, but my biggest support throughout pregnancy will be my husband (he is leaning toward home as I proceed with my search) and my mother. She is adamantly opposed to twins outside of a hospital.

I am in search of reassurance that homebirth is a good option. Or insistence that I am crazy to even consider it with a "complication" such as twins. I want to get this decided soon so that I can spend some months trying to relax and accustom myself to whichever I choose.

Remember that CPMs are not ILLEGAL in MD. They're just ALEGAL. It's a big difference.

I would say try at home first. You ALWAYS have the option to go to a hospital, but if you end up at the hospital, you don't have the option to go home.

congrats!! I'm also in MD and there are certainly options for you. One of my friends had twins at home because she wanted to avoid a c-section. She was originally planning on a birth center birth but when they found out she was having twins they changed plans. She's not really a huge home birth person either but she figured that was the best way to have the birth she wanted. She recently had another child at a birth center this time.

I'm not sure where in MD you are but I know that my homebirth midwife out of Baltimore has attended several twin births if you're interested. She's a CPM and I really like her and will be going with her again as well.

though I find the statement of illegal vs alegal interesting because I thought that it was clear that CPMS are technically illegal not just 'not mentioned' which I'd assume alegal would mean. Of course, it's been like 13 years or so since any legal action has been taken against in CPM in MD if I'm remembering the facts right and I wouldn't say that MD is hostile to CPMs at all.

Not to hijack, but "alegal" is actually not a word and in states where midwives are not offered licensure but practice midwifery anyway, they are practicing outside of the law, which is illegal.

That said, a mother cannot be prosecuted for her choice to have her baby at home and if a midwife is willing to attend you illegally, I think that is her choice. She's weighed the risks and chosen to land on the side of providing safe out of hospital options for mothers. I would def. choose a homebirth with twins over an OR "birth" (vaginal or otherwise). If this is your first pregnancy, it'll probably take you longer than the "very short while" they're saying you can have to accomplish a vaginal birth. Good luck in your decision making!

Twins....at this point I'll just be glad if I see a heartbeat at all on u/s. I've been trying to convince myself that worry is futile for two weeks now. DH said something about "what if it's twins?" but we do this every time I'm pregnant and I haven't had any multiples yet. We'll see tomorrow, I guess...
I used the word alegal, because AFAIK, CPMs are only illegal if they have individually (meaning that certain midwife) been served with a cease-and-desist order by the state. Otherwise, they're operating without licensing, but they have not legally been told to stop by the state - which would make their practicing illegal.

DH does that, too. I think he just likes seeing me squirm.

so someone will kindly reassure me that mother's intuition that there are twins and general nervousness and fear of having twins can cause similar feelings in early pregnancy....

I keep getting these twin thoughts and images and maybe dreams too, dreams are harder because they're just crazy. But I'm not usually one that obsesses over things like twins. My last pregnancy I never gave it a second though, but sheesh, it's a very persistent train of thought this one. I'm hoping it's just general stress of what to expect when the baby comes since this last one was a lot more challenging than I expected.

I was totally convinced my last one was a twin until the 20 week ultrasound, because it was so wildly different from my others. I was sick all the time-not morning sickness, but something very different and hard to describe-and then I started having contractions at 17 weeks. It was just such an odd pregnancy. I was right in that something was wrong-I ended up having HELLP syndrome-but at the time I thought I was just going nuts!

This time, I have terrible morning sickness almost all the time, I'm hungry non-stop, but eating makes me sick. I highly doubt I'd have more than one in there though. I mean, as it was I was on the pill when I got pregnant, I've had multiples in there before and the extra's didnt grow (twins with my 2nd and triplets with my surro baby-she was via IVF), I just dont think I'd have twins. If I did, itd be bad since I'd have to move too. So unlike other times, I'm very much hoping that when I have that first US, they see one healthy little bub. (Which means I'll end up with twins, right? lmao)

I have 4 year old twins. Would be fun if someone in this group is carrying twins! They're lots of fun!

It is important to know if you are carrying twins if you strongly suspect them. Identical twins can share a placenta and are at risk for twin-twin transfusion syndrome and you would need close monitoring. But that's not a complication until later pregnancy.

Judging by the frequent "could it be twins?" questions that come up on the Parenting Multiples forum here, lots of mamas worry that there are 2 in there.
