New cat owner...lots of questions!

We just got a cat and I have some questions that I'm hoping all you wise pet owners will be able to answer.

The cat is supposedly about four months old (a stray, from the humane society) and I'm trying to get her used to the house gradually. We live in an ~1650 square foot house with a basement and two other levels. Right now we're keeping her in an unused upstairs bedroom with her food, water and litterbox and are going in to play with her several times a day. She's also been out and followed us around the rest of the upstairs a little bit.

How do I make sure she always knows where a litterbox is and actually uses it? So far she's using the one in the bedroom just fine, but if we let her roam around the house, how do we make sure she doesn't get lost or confused? How many litterboxes should we have? I was thinking that eventually one in the top floor and one in the basement would be enough, but should we have one on the main floor for a while, too? If so, when can we remove it? And would removing it cause more trouble than just not having it there to begin with?

I had a cat as a kid living in a similarly-sized house and we only had a litterbox in the basement, so I'm not sure how to proceed. I don't want more litterboxes than absolutely necessary, but I also don't want the cat to become confused about where to go.

Another question -- what KIND of litter do you all recommend? Right now she's using some non-scented clumping litter and it gets EVERYWHERE. Not only was she kicking it out of the box (though I just switched her to a covered box, so hopefully that will help and she'll be okay with it) but it sticks to her paws and she tracks it around. I found something called "Yesterday's News" that's recycled paper in the form of pellets. Is this stuff any good? I like the idea of the clumping as far as scooping the ickies out goes, but I hate how the litter has been getting everywhere.

And how do you dispose of the stuff you scoop out? I could have other people save the bags their newspapers come in (we don't get the paper) and use that, but then I hate to just throw it in the garbage because I don't want my garbage to smell. Anyone have an alternative or a system?

Also, she will be an indoor cat, but should she be wearing a collar with tags anyway? With a three-year old in the house and a husband who carries music gear in and out of the house regularly I worry about the cat getting out. She is microchipped, but I think it would be better if she got out if a neighbor could just read the tag and call us. And if she should wear a collar, should I worry about it strangling her? The pet store had some expandable collars. Do they work?

Finally, what kind of pet food should I be feeding her? I know someone who owns a raw meat natural pet food business here in town, but it's pretty expensive. Is it worth it? Could I do half-and-half? Is the raw stuff safe as far as the cat eating it and then her licking us or whatever?

I'm sure I'll have more questions, lol, but any advice on the ones I've asked already would be VERY much appreciated!

TIA.

We have two cats, they are both 2 years old. When we first got them, we basically locked them in their "room" for a few days, till we were sure they were using their litter box. Every time we move, we repeat this btw, so they just went through another "solitary confinement" period a few weeks ago

We have one litterbox, big and covered. We leave it so the entrance is facing a corner, and we have a litter mat we got at a pet store on the floor under it. it's REALLY helped with litter tracking so far. We use Fresh Step litter, clumping, and we're not that green so we just scoop it out, put it in a plastic bag, and throw it away. DH usually takes it out right away instead of leaving it in the trash can in the house though. Our litterbox is in the basement in the laundry room and the cats haven't had an accident. I think once you know your cat is litter trained, it's okay to move the box once or twice. If you leave a poo in there before you move it, and show her where the new location is, she should be fine.

I would absolutely recommend collaring/tagging her, just in case she escapes. My two beasts chew through collars (*#&@!!!) and I am terrified they are going to escape somehow and I'll never know what happened to them. It's just a peace of mind thing for me. They do sell those breakaway collars that will open if the cat snags it on something like a tree or a fence. I would recommend that kind, personally. Another state of mind thing.

We just feed our cats Purina cat food, which will probably get me flamed but they like it and they're both very healthy, EXTREMELY ACTIVE cats.

Congrats on your new baby. What is her name?

ETA: When we first got our two, Panda would "get lost." He'd whine and cry and generally look confused until we showed him where the litter box was. Once he got to be about 4 months old this stopped, but just wanted to add that in case you see your baby doing the same thing. Of course, Panda is not a particularly bright cat, (unlike our Bamboo, who I swear could solve the energy crisis if he had thumbs and could speak English.) so maybe it's just him

Her name is Venus. My first choice (Jenny) got shot down by DS. He agreed that ZuZu would be good, but that's one of the many nicknames our neighbor calls her daughter, lol. DH picked Venus and DS agreed, and since DH is not a cat lover I thought I'd just go along with it.

just a few quick thoughts for now...
-she won't get lost/ not be able to find her box, ime. no matter where you put it. i have never known a cat to be unable to find their box, even if they didn't see the first spot you put it when they just moved in with you. If they eliminate outside the box there are other reasons.
(eta: ha! I should have read the thread first, i see someone else has a cat who can get lost! )
-there is no perfect or even great cat litter. when i worked at a vet clinic i ordered in and tried many different kinds and ultimately settled on the typical unscented clumping. not great, but as good as it gets. an old rug that the cat has to walk across after getting out helps some. one thing I have not tried but have heard works well is a top-entry litter box.

-one box for one cat*should* be fine, though i have to say i have been ridiculously lucky with my cats and have had no problem with one box for THREE cats. ymmv
