HELP!!! I'm financially illiterate!!

Hi all- just finding this forum (MDC truly has everything), so i'm not sure if there is already something like this out there...

I'll try to keep it short.

Basically I am in a space of seeking to claim my financial independance and realizing that I am super murky on how to proceed. In college I thought financial savvy was not falling for any of the credit card offers and paying my rent on time. I have worked various jobs since I reached my teens, and alwyas been able to meet ends and still have enough left over for occaisional fun. I've always been fairly frugal, but now I fear I've outgrown some of this simplicity. For instance- I've never had my own car.
I have pretty baisc values when it comes to money. I appreciate luxury, but generally find it impractiacl for my needs. Having a car was never really an issue. I enjoy walking. But now with 2 babes, I can certainly see the advantages in time and convenience.
I vacillate between feeling a bit juvenile compared to friends who have supplied and maintained more in their lives (cars, designer flatware, extensive grooming supplies) and feeling liberated by my lack of dependance on stuff...

But now I am starting to want to order things more for my family's future. And I am having a challenge deciding how to prioritize. Also, as the economy changes, I'mn not sure which resources have the most valuable info. I need basic stuff, but would like to look ahead to more complex matters of planning as well. :

I need to learn about life insurance. Investments. Saving for DP and I as wel as college for the kids.

But first I am concerned with sustaining my family comfortably as a self-employed mama. I am a doula and Lamaze teacher who's crafty. I would love to learn about other WAHM supplementary streams of income. We want to 'school' the children at home. We don't mind supplementing our food budget by growing our own. : DP and I disagree on a vehicle. I'd buy used and reliable. He wants new and shiny.

We've been living with my folks for the past 3 years, since DS was about 8 mos. old. We lived on our own for years before that and enjoyed the eclectic bohemian life.
So we'll be starting from scratch basically, but one thing I do have in abundance is Faith that we can carve out the life of our dreams, and Determination to get there...

I welcome your advice MDC sisters. But please no deragatory lifestyle judgments, K?
Thanks so much already!

I would go the Dave Ramsey route- think he would answer most of your questions. been very helpful for me. "Total Money Makeover" is his most recent book.

I found Suze Orman helpful as well. Both authors were readily available at my library and I found having two sources of information made me more confident in my decisions.
