that is close to a fuzzi bunz but obviously NOT? I saw one at my LLL meeting and LOVED it!! I want one but just don't have the $ especially when I have microfleece and PUL in my sewing room. The part that threw me for a loop was doing the elastic? Thoughts/suggestions?

Hi Kerrie!
There was an awesome geocities website somewhere to make your own Fuzzi Bunz, it was great and now I can't find it!! I will look a bit and see if I can.
In the meantime, try visiting http://www.poopockets.com/mfym/pocket/ppp.htm That gives instructions for making pocket diapers using the Poopockets pattern, but it would likely at least give an idea.
Also, www.diapersewing.com that mama is wealth of information! I would suggest emailing her directly, I think she would have some great ideas!
HTH!

It seems like I remember someone (probably here at MDC) saying that it is fairly easy to alter the Honeyboy Home pattern to make a pocket dipe. Is this true, or am I way off-base?
My mom has offered to make me some diapers, and since I will have 2 little (well, one little and one not-so-little) ones in diapers in just a few weeks, I want to take her up on her offer!
I've been looking at the Honeyboy pattern and I think it's what I want (in that it seems to be a great pattern, very complete and easy for beginning sewers..not to mention, multi-sized so that it would work for both kiddoes!) but I'd really love the quick dry-ability of a pocket. And dh is begging for an AIO, so I'm just thinking that if this one pattern can meet all those needs, that's the way to go!
My mom is a very experienced seamstress, but this will be her first diaper-making project, and the first time working with materials like fleece, windpro, etc.
What say you all? Is this the way to go, or is there a better solution?
TIA,

I just recently started sewing the home honeyboy, and for having to learn how to use a sewing machine (didn't even know how to thread a machine lol) and finishing a functional diaper (took 3 tries lol), its fairly easy to do.
I haven't yet, but I will be doing a pocket style honeyboy and it really doesn't seem like its going to be too hard. I think it might actually be simpler than following the traditional instructions...but remember, I don't speak from experience. I think I'm going to try a pocket in the next few days...maybe I'll come back and bump this up to let you know how it went lol
Also, it probably wouldn't be too difficult to substitute the materials you want for the fleece. I plan on making some covers and AIO's using wool jersey and PUL.

Do, PLEASE, let me know how your pocket attemt turns out! (If you don't bump the thread in a week or so, I will! heehee!

Again, many thanks! And good luck with your project!

I'm trying to make some pocket diapers. I have the Honeyboy pattern, but I just bought the Cuddlebuns pattern and I think it is MUCH better. It is far simpler to make and the instructions they give are more along the lines of what I'm trying to do (serge, use Lastin). I also really like the shape a whole lot better. The Cuddlebuns doesn't have the funny wings that the Honeyboy has (which I think only add bulk - something I'm trying to get away from). They're both available at Sewshoppe.

I have to agree with pageta. I bought the Honeyboy pattern, too, awhile back and I just thought it was very bulky...hard on a little ones spine to have all that bulk pushing their hips up when they lay flat. I've seen a few different fabric combinations, but it just still seemed bulky, LOL! I do like the Cuddlebuns one. Poopockets is a nice one as well, I like the leg gussets. She makes a side snap version, and that is awesome! Side-snap diapers have an incredible fit! And no droopy-wing front.
I am a professional seamstress so I thought I would sew all my diapers but I ended up just buying them instead. LOL! I like Little Lambs hemp fleece (hemp gets softer and more absorbent with washing and use and is naturally anti-fungal....what a miracle fabric!) and Bumkins AIOs. Diapers are so fun to sew, but it does take some time and work so make sure to use quality fabrics and materials, especially fleeces, some of those Joann's bargain fleeces get so pilly and thread-bare after just a month.
I hope your mom enjoys it, it is fun!

SheBear...have you purchased the HB pattern yet? I'm getting the feeling that there are some other patterns worth considering lol I chose HB because they were an AIO and adorable. One thing I know I don't like so far is that they take forever to dry in the dryer. I've heard about them being bulky (of course, only after purchasing the pattern lol), but by using PUL and wool jersey, and trying out other styles like covers to go over prefolds or pocket style, I'm hoping I can still find a system with a little less bulk.
About that pocket HB...I haven't got the chance to try it yet. I wanted to get some PUL, but things came up and the funds just aren't there
Maybe when the tax refund comes in lol

OK. Here's what I have done and it works well. When cutting out your pattern, make the back a little bit longer (I don't know why, I like the seam allowance to be longer when I can see it) and then before sewing the layers together, put the elastic in the back and sew it in (I make a pocket for it then sew the ends down). You can do this to both layers (so your liner is elasticed (???) too (I find that is too much elastic on my 7 week olds back). Thn pin and sew like you would any other dipe (I sew then turn and top stitch the tabs). I know this sounds confusing, but it really is easy.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Lestouffer, thanks for that explanation! I *think* I see what you mean....I'm still a beginner myself, but I'm sure my mom will understand that!
So, you make a casing for the elastic, rather than sewing it down? How's that hold up long term? Just curious...
Mamajo, no I haven't bought the pattern yet. Gotta get on the ball, lol! Wish I could find someone who wanted to sell their used pattern...new, it's a bit more expensive than I realized! IKWYM about the drying time.....I have a couple dipes that a friend made me, and they look (to me) just like the HB pattern. They always require a longer dry time (but then, that's compared to my prefolds, so not surprising!
). Drying time is the main reason I wanted to try doing it as a pocket. That, and the fact that I could customize the absorbency for daytime or overnight.
Mama_with_faith, thanks for your insight. I looked at the CB pattern also, but my main prob is I can't seem to find a good description/picture of how they look/are made, etc. Any links for examples of CBs that others have made? I really need to at least see the end product, kwim? Also, the HB-like dipes my friend made (I don't think she actually used the pattern, but made her own, but it's very similar) are quite trim. Certainly no bulkier than my prefolds! Not sure what you mean about the droopy-wing thing....I've heard others say that (about front-tab dipes in general) and I'm just not quite sure what it means!
Pageta, thanks for your advice, as well. My main reason for gong with the HB is that I want a pattern that I can use, as well. I don't have (and don't see much chance in getting) a serger, and it looked (from the descriptions I've found) like the HB would be the simplest pattern to use when your options are limited to just a basic machine, KWIM? I dunno....I probably need to do more research!
In the meantime, I've got prefolds! They ain't fancy, but at least I know they work!

I have the most recent edition of the Cuddlebuns pattern and it include instructions for sewing without a serger. They don't necessarily tell you details like that before you buy... The pictures they have of the turn-and-stitched ones are really cute, almost better looking than the serged ones IMO.
