Red Dye!!!!!

I have been struggling for the past year to figure out my daughter's food allergy that causes excema all over her little legs and arms. After narrowing it down to something that seemed to be only in processed food, we finally found it to be red dye! I am so excited to finally have and answer and wanted to share the good news : :

Besides food, remember to check the ingredients on vitamins, advil/tylenol, benadryl, etc., b/c many of them contain red 40. Even things that don't look red or pink colored sometimes have it hidden in them.

it seems insane to me that people would add red dye when they don't need to make something red (and even then, there are LOTS of natural red dyes!).

my artist background comes in handy here, we don't just have to avoid red, red is part of orange and purple too! the IL's wanted to give her a snow cone and suggested a purple one, they were surprised to see that it was indeed on the ingredients.

Also avoid Carmine, if that's the case. I read recently from a mama (can't remember if it was here or on another blog...) that Carmine is what triggered a reaction in her DC --- as it turns out, it is ground beetles which are used for red food dye, and it doesn't have to be labeled all the time.

Glad you found it out!

You might also watch out for Annatto. It definitely bothers me pretty similarly as Red 40 dye does.
